With ten players, Karlsruher SC narrowly missed out on reaching the semi-finals of the DFB Cup for the first time in 25 years in the second division duel against Hamburger SV.

On Wednesday evening, Baden lost 3-2 (2-2, 2-2, 1-0) on penalties at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg.

In front of 25,000 spectators, coach Christian Eichner's team had 2 until injury time:

Hamburg - 1 led, but then left the Hanseatic city as a loser.

"You can only buy something from if you progress," said the strong KSC goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck on Sky.

"The end is very bitter."

In the attractive game, Philip Heise (40th minute) and Philipp Hofmann (50th) scored the goals for KSC in regular time with a free kick.

HSV striker Robert Glatzel equalized with two goals (52'/90'+1).

As extra time was goalless, it went to penalties.

KSC goalkeeper Gersbeck initially saved Sebastian Schonlau's shot, but then Marvin Wanitzek, Ricardo van Rhijn and Daniel O'Shaughnessy failed.

"Pure emptiness," Hofmann said of his feelings after the end.

"It's hard to find words now."

Previously, Christoph Kobald had seen yellow-red (72nd), so that the Karlsruhe team only played with ten professionals.

Sonny Kittel missed a penalty kick for HSV (72nd).

In the only second division duel of the quarter-finals, Hamburg wanted to redeem themselves for the league defeat against promotion favorites Werder Bremen (2: 3) three days earlier.

After a stormy start by the hosts, the Badeners responded with promising attacks and, despite less possession of the ball, had more chances until the half-time break.

The Hamburgers were powerless against the directly converted free kick from Heise.

The HSV defense was not in the picture when KSC scored the second goal.

Immediately after the goal, the game picked up even more intensity after a three-pointer from Hamburg.

Despite the wear and tear of strength in the minority, the KSC was always looking for the offensive and fought passionately.
