Holidays: the French want it to shine, even if it means spending more

2022-03-03T06:49:30.478Z

If the year 2020 was dominated by desires for nature and the outdoors, 2022 will be played out under the sign of caution, especially among the youngest.

Covid-19 continues to transform travel habits.

More than the budget or the air service of their destination, the French now choose where to go according to… cleanliness!

This is what we learn from the latest data from the Travellyse tourism platform developed by the European firm Interface Tourism [1].

For 40% of travellers,

cleanliness has thus become the priority criterion

of choice for their holidays in 2022. And this for all age categories: 18-24 year olds making it their first criterion, as do 35-44 year olds and 65-74 year olds.

At the start of 2020, before the arrival of Covid-19, the criterion only appeared in 30th position in the ranking, cited by only 9% of travelers.

If, in previous years, travel trends were dominated by desires for nature and the outdoors, 2022 will definitely be placed under the sign of caution.

Behind the aspect of cleanliness, the same study tells us that health and hygiene standards, then the presence of high safety standards are on the podium of the criteria for choosing destinations by French holidaymakers.

A consequence no doubt also linked to the health crisis: weekends in a large European city, the famous

city-breaks,

are also losing ground and have not reached their pre-Covid level of popularity.

Behind these notions of hygiene and health safety, outdoor activities then remain a priority, as does the fact of being able to take a direct flight.

The

budgetary question

has lost importance: from the 3rd most important criterion before the Covid, it rose to

9th position

in 2022.

Travellyze's image barometer, based on a complete algorithm taking into account perception, experience and knowledge of a destination's tourist products, reveals in its 2022 ranking a predominance of European destinations with Italy, Portugal and Spain on your mind.

But the first place in the top 10 is however occupied by

Canada

for the 3rd consecutive year.

The

United States

is the only other destination outside Europe appearing in the ranking, confirming the popularity of North America with French travellers.

Finally, note that the health crisis seems to have played on the nerves of the French: the percentage of travelers aspiring to relaxing stays has almost tripled between 2020 and 2022, from 5 to 13%.

Similarly, that of French people declaring that they prefer holidays in the sun and on the beach has doubled over the same period, rising from 11 to 20%.

Conversely, vacations combining multiple destinations seem to have lost their appeal.

The French now want to take their time and no longer multiply the stages: they were 12.5% to appreciate this type of trip in 2020, they are only 4.7% in 2022. All that remains is to choose your destination .

Travellyze data is based on a questionnaire conducted twice a year in 13 European markets.

For France, the survey is sent each year to a sample of 3,000 people, in June and September.
