NASA has launched a new satellite to monitor hurricanes, dust storms and landslides over Earth's Western Hemisphere.
The GOS T spacecraft will provide around-the-clock tracking of lightning, coastal fog and climate change, and may also be able to detect wildfires before they are reported on the ground, according to the British Daily Mail.
Pam Sullivan, director of the NOAA Program, said that the NASA-supported GOS satellites provide the only continuous coverage of weather and hazardous environmental conditions in the Western Hemisphere, as well as monitor solar flares and the resulting space weather.
The satellite was launched into orbit by an Atlas V rocket from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
