The war criminal in the Kremlin sends his soldiers on a senseless campaign and has opened the gates of hell for the people of Ukraine.

But Putin will lose this war against freedom.

A commentary by Georg Anastasiadis.

Warlord Putin has opened the gates of hell for the people of Ukraine - but he will end up in the same hell, this satisfaction remains for his victims.

Every day it becomes clearer what a terrible price Russia has to pay for this senseless campaign.

Above all, the Russian civilian population is slowly becoming aware of it.

It is she who takes everything from the war criminals in the Kremlin: their modest wealth.

The Russian honor.

The national pride.

Overnight, Russia has become a rogue state, ostracized even by rogue world sports organizations like FIFA and the IOC.

The country's artistic and sporting icons - Netrebko, Gergiev, Medvedev - have been banned from performing worldwide and no longer increase Russia's fame, but prove its shame.

Even the most aggressive Kremlin propaganda can no longer cover this up.

The awakening of many Russians to the new reality is eroding the foundations of Putin's power.

Ukraine war: In the end, Putin's military will force the separation of eastern Ukraine

Putin's policies are hitting ordinary people harder than the stars and oligarchs: the unprecedented sanctions and the now almost complete withdrawal of Western companies will reduce their incomes, and flight bans will lock them out of Europe.

And Russian mothers weep for their fallen sons who were almost children.

And what is all this for?

For an unpopular war against a brother people.

The soldiers who terrorize Ukrainians today will soon have to be ordered back home by Putin to suppress citizens who rebel against his megalomania.

And the money that Russia earned from gas exports will soon no longer be available for new wars.

Unfortunately, it's true: Even if volunteers from all over the world are pouring into Ukraine now, as in the Spanish civil war, to help the heroically fighting people, the conquest of the country can hardly be prevented.

But even Moscow could not win the years of partisan warfare against the second largest country in Europe that followed.

In the end, Putin's fearsome military will force the secession of eastern Ukraine but will not be able to prevent the rest of Ukraine from joining the EU.

For this modest "victory," Russia loses everything: its prosperity, its standing in the world, and its power to divide and weaken the West, which it has done everything to achieve for decades.

Ukraine war: The more cruel Putin acts, the more powerful the resistance becomes

Putin's (empty) nuclear threat reveals how surprised and shocked he is by the economic war with which the West has retaliated against him for invading Ukraine;

there was something like that recently against the Hitler regime.

The chancellor's rearmament promise, the CSU leader's call for longer nuclear lifetimes, and the Green Economics Minister's statement that security of supply is now more important than climate protection show how determined even Germany, which Putin ridiculed, has taken up the fight.

The West will emerge strengthened and revitalized.

Millions of able Ukrainians fleeing to Western Europe will help our economy while Russia, cut off from tech imports, falls behind.

The Kremlin clique has turned Russia into a pariah against which millions of people around the world are rising.

And the more cruel Putin is in his actions against Ukraine, as hot-hearted defenders stop his ill-motivated force, the more powerful the resistance becomes.

Putin can no longer win this war, which in reality is a war against freedom and the entire civilized world.
