In some places in the district, the number of inhabitants is growing at an above-average rate.

A church has shrunk.

This results in a comparison of figures from the years 2016 and 2021.

District

– The number of residents in the Weilheim-Schongau district has climbed by almost 2,800 within five years.

This is shown by reports from the Bavarian State Office for Statistics.

Of course, the growth of around 2.1 percent does not affect all 34 communities equally.

The leaders are Hohenfurch and Polling with 8.2 and 8.0 percent respectively.

Altenstadt brings up the rear with minus 1.4 percent.

The district's largest municipality in terms of population is still the district town of

Weilheim

, where 22,763 people had their main residence on September 30 last year.

This is 412 more than five years earlier, an increase of 1.8 percent.

Growth across the county was slightly larger at 2.1 percent.

The population increased from 133,839 to 136,612.

Of the five largest towns,

Peiting

grew the most in percentage terms in the period mentioned: the number of inhabitants climbed from 11,309 to 11,587, which corresponds to an increase of 2.5 percent.

In

Penzberg

, on the other hand, stagnation was recorded.

According to the state office, only ten people were added in the city of 16,500.

In a comparison of 2018 (16,615 on September 30) and 2021, the number of inhabitants even fell by 108. However, new building areas should bring significant growth to Penzberg in the coming years.

Behind Weilheim and Penzberg is the market town of

Peißenberg

- with 12,666 inhabitants as of September 30, 2021 -

the third largest municipality in the district.

Just behind, the city of

Schongau

ranks fourth with 12,399 people.

Significantly smaller towns experienced the largest percentage increase in the number of inhabitants over the five years.

In

Hohenfurch

, the number grew from 1,555 to 1,682 and thus by 8.2 percent.

With an increase of 270 inhabitants - to 3629 -

Polling

brought it to 8.0 percent.

The monastery village was already faced with challenges due to its population growth – for example the task of providing sufficient kindergarten places.

Apparently, as the mayor at the time, Felicitas Betz, said in 2017, Weilheim has a "belt belt" that makes Polling a little more popular as a place to live than other municipalities in the area.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Weilheim-Penzberg newsletter.)

The growth in Hohenpeissenberg

corresponds exactly to the district-wide average

: In the municipality, which had 3853 inhabitants on September 30 last year, there was a population increase of 2.1 percent compared to the 2016 reference date.

That corresponds to 81 people.

However, the growth in Hohenpeissenberg was not continuous: At the end of September 2018, the town already had 3,857 inhabitants - a little more than three years later.

The population figures in Rottenbuch

and

Raisting

were almost stagnant

, where only one or five residents were added in the five-year period mentioned.

The increases are also low in

Habach

(plus seven inhabitants) and in

Wessobrunn

(plus nine).

It should be noted that there were fluctuations in the population figures not only in Penzberg and Hohenpeissenberg, as already mentioned, but also in other municipalities over the five years.

An example: Wessobrunn had a population of 2230 on September 30, 2016, two years later 2270, and in 2021 2239 people were registered.

In

Prem

, the smallest community in the district, 27 residents were added within five years.

921 people lived in the village on the reporting date in 2021.

The increase compared to 2016 was three percent and was thus above the district average.

With its minus,

Altenstadt

is alone when comparing the figures from 2016 and 2021 in the district.

The town's population fell by 45 to 3275, which may be due to the fact that the number of employees in the local barracks was reduced.

In the administrative community (VG) Altenstadt, which also includes

Hohenfurch, Ingenried, Schwabbruck

and

Schwabsoien

, there was an increase of 2.9 percent from 2016 to 2021.

8447 inhabitants were recorded at the end of September 2021.

In terms of population, VG Altenstadt is the largest of the seven VGs in the district.

The smallest is - with 3720 residents on the key date 2021 - the VG Rottenbuch, to which the monastery village has merged with

Böbing

.
