According to Kiev, the Russian army has occupied the site of the Ukrainian nuclear power plant Zaporizhia.

"The operating staff controls the energy blocks and ensures their operation," said the Ukrainian nuclear regulatory authority on Friday.

Russia initially did not comment.

The Russian forces had attacked Europe's largest nuclear power plant in the night and caused a fire in a building for training events and a laboratory.

A reactor was not affected by the fire.

According to the fire brigade, Russian soldiers did not initially let the fire-fighting squads through to the scene of the fire.

Firefighters only gained access after hours and were able to extinguish the fire.

According to the Ukrainian supervisory authority, no increased radioactivity was measured in the vicinity of the nuclear power plant.

Boris Johnson sees Europe's security at risk

Still, the fire was an alarm signal.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Russian President Vladimir Putin's "reckless actions" "could now directly endanger the security of all of Europe".

He wants to reach a special session of the UN Security Council "in the coming hours".

US President Joe Biden called on Russia to end military activities in the area around the nuclear power plant.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke of targeted shelling of reactor blocks by Russian tanks and accused Russia of "nuclear terrorism".

Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko called for NATO to intervene.

In the afternoon, the foreign ministers of the EU states want to meet again for a special meeting in Brussels.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and US Secretary of State Antony Blinken are also expected to attend.

It remains to be seen whether Boris Johnson can also reach a meeting of the UN Security Council.
