Germany has decided.

On Friday evening, TV viewers chose 24-year-old Malik Harris to represent Germany at ESC 2022 in Turin.

  • Germany was looking for a participant for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin on Friday evening.

  • In the end, 24-year-old Malik Harris from Bavaria prevailed.

He will represent Germany at the ESC with his song "Rockstars".

  • The Ukraine war also became a topic during the show, when the Ukrainian singer and ESC winner Jamala* was a guest and performed her song "1944".

10:59 p.m .:

With the end of the German preliminary decision “Germany 12 Points” our live ticker ends today.

We thank you for reading along and wish you a nice evening.

ESC 2022: German preliminary round ended - Bayer and TV star's son go to Turin

10:57 p.m .:

Malik Harris now has almost two months to prepare for the big stage.

On May 14th, the ESC 2022 will take place in Turin.

Then a successor will be sought for the band Måneskin, which was able to bring the ESC to Italy last year.

The young singer has already convinced the German ESC fans.

Now it's the turn of the rest of Europe.

Harris can also learn from his famous father how best to present himself in front of television cameras.

Because he is none other than the TV presenter Ricky Harris, who has made a name for himself through his own talk show "Ricky!" and through his participation in various reality TV formats in the German TV landscape .

But son Malik is already making a good impression in front of the camera.

10:50 p.m .:

A Bavarian drives to Italy for Germany.

Malik Harris was able to convince both radio listeners and TV viewers of himself and his song "Rockstars" and buy the ticket to Turin.

The 24-year-old still doesn't understand his victory when he is allowed to perform his song again at the end of the show.

ESC 2022: Decision made in the preliminary round - Malik Harris drives to Turin for Germany

10:42 p.m .:

The radio voices only represent 50 percent of the result.

The other 50 percent comes from TV viewers.

And then it gets tight again in the end.

The decision falls between Malik Harris and Maël and Jonas.

Malik Harris achieved a total of 208 points.

Maël and Jonas actually slipped down to second place due to the TV voting and just missed out on victory with 185 points.

So it's clear:

Malik Harris is going to ESC 2022 for Germany!

10:36 p.m .:

The decision is imminent.

Who is going to Turin for Germany?

First, the nine radio stations are allowed to announce the points that were submitted in online voting.

A clear picture emerges here.

In the first four radio stations, 12 points each go to Maël and Jonas.

Malik Harris and Felicia Lu initially landed in 2nd and 3rd place. The points awarded for the following five radio stations also changed little.

All of Germany presents itself in unity at the ESC preliminary round.

The mode is supposed to create excitement, but since the results are almost the same everywhere, this tends to be absent.

Are Maël and Jonas already certain to be the winners?

Only Bayern does not give the twelve points to the two Koblenz, but to the local hero from Landsberg: Malik Harris.

ESC 2022: Jamala sends a clear message after the performance - "War in the heart of Europe"

10:22 p.m .:

“This is a war happening in the heart of Europe.

I don't want us standing here on the side.

I want us to help end this war together.

The only thing I can do is sing here, ”explains the singer of her performance today.

Schöneberger reacts visibly moved and gratefully gives up the fast run of the candidates.

10:17 p.m .:

To a standing ovation and with a Ukraine flag, Jamala enters the stage and performs her song “1944”.

The song is about the deportation of their ancestors to the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea by the Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.

This historic song is also becoming alarmingly topical in the context of current events. "Thank you, Germany, thank you," says Jamala after her performance, adding "Slava Ukraini!" - long live Ukraine.

ESC 2022: Ukrainian singer sings for Ukraine - "I want the whole world to hear our voice"

10:15 p.m .:

The program then takes on a more serious tone.

In a clip, the Ukrainian singer Jamala reports on her escape from the Ukrainian crisis area.

They had to leave their husbands behind and fled to safety behind the national borders with their children.

“Today I am singing on behalf of the children.

I sing today in the name of women.

I want the whole world to hear our voices.

I will shout for the whole world to hear that this cannot be the case.”

10:11 p.m .:

At the current time, of course, the song “A Little Peace” by Nicole should not be missing.

Exactly 40 years after her victory at ESC 1982, the song remains more relevant than ever.

ESC 2022: The decision is up to the spectators - who will represent Germany in Turin?

10:08 p.m .:

In order to bridge the waiting time, the two ESC experts Conchita and Jane Comerford present a medley of their own ESC songs “Rise Like a Phoenix” and “No No Never”, as well as other ESC songs over the years stuck in your ears.

10:05 p.m .:

Now the decision is in the hands of the viewers.

TV viewers can now vote for their favorites by calling or texting.

10 p.m.:

This allowed all acts to make their contributions.

"A likeable vintage," summarizes Thomas Hermanns.

Jane Comerford is also enthusiastic about the performances: "Everyone was so radiant." However, to be fair, the studio guests are not yet allowed to name their favourites.

ESC 2022: All performances - who is going to the ESC for Germany?

9:55 p.m .:

The last act of the evening is Nico Suave and Team Liebe.

The merger of different artists comes mainly from the rap scene and brings the song "Hallo Welt" with it.

Feel-good music performed by two men and two women.

Could that be Germany's song for this year's ESC in Turin?

The statement is true: "Why isn't peace never there when you need it?"

9:50 p.m .:

The show must go on and so Felicia Lu is the next.

The singer, who was born in Bavaria, has tried unsuccessfully to represent Germany at the ESC.

Now the 26-year-old is trying again with the song "Anxiety".

Vocally, Felicia Lu is strongly reminiscent of Germany's last ESC winner Lena.

ESC 2022: German preliminary decision in the live ticker - candidate with mega text dropouts

9:38 p.m.:

Emily Roberts is next.

Born in Hamburg, she always wanted to be a musician and signed her first record deal at the age of 19.

Her song "Soap" deals with the topic of separation in an extremely cheerful way.

The song sounds poppy and happy, but Emily Roberts has a textual dropout at the beginning of the second verse and needs several seconds to remember the right lines again.

After the performance, Roberts has to laugh about himself the most.

"I washed so thoroughly that the lyrics came out," explains the singer with a wink, referring to the name of her song.

Barbara Schöneberger tries to cheer up the young talent: "It doesn't matter, we all recognized that it's a huge song," explains the moderator.

9:30 p.m .:

The third act tonight is Eros Atomus, who spent his youth in Germany, Holland, the USA, Italy and China.

Living international understanding.

"Alive" is the name of his song, with which he wants to send the message how nice it is to be alive.

The performance starts slow and calm and builds to life in the chorus to the anthem.

"You don't have to be forced to go on stage," Schöneberger remarks enthusiastically.

ESC preliminary decision 2022: Schöneberger enthusiastic - "You are in such a good mood"

9:22 p.m .:

It goes on in quick succession.

Maël and Jonas from Koblenz are the second artists of the evening.

"I swear to God" is the name of their song.

Interesting fact: Jonas' father has already written a song for the ESC.

With none other than Thomas Anders.

Now the son wants to be on the big ESC stage himself.

Musically, the performance is a radio-ready pop-rock song with a driving refrain.

"You're in such a great mood," Schöneberger remarked after the performance.

ESC 2022: German preliminary decision for Turin live - Malik Harris submits

9:17 p.m .:

"Music is in my head all the time," explains the 24-year-old, who will perform the song "Rockstars".

Representing Germany at the ESC would be “an honor” for him.

The song is a ballad, lyrically referring to the singer's youth.

In the second verse, the 24-year-old raps the lyrics while switching back and forth between piano, guitar and drums.

At the end of his song, Harris presents the back of his guitar, which has the message "Stand with Ukraine" printed on it.

9:14 p.m .:

It’s getting serious.

Tonight's participants will be invited onto the stage in turn and briefly introduced.

Afterwards they can sit in the first row on leather armchairs and enjoy the show.

Schöneberger immediately announces the first act of the evening.

Malik Harris from Landsberg in Bavaria.

9:10 p.m .:

Schöneberger then welcomes the concentrated ESC celebrities in the studio.

ESC winner Conchita Wurst, Texas Lightning singer and ESC participant Jane Comerford, and "super fan" Thomas Hermanns.

ESC 2022: German preliminary decision - Schöneberger and Ceylan copy Måneskin

9:05 p.m .:

Barbara Schöneberger does not splash out at the beginning and opens the show with her own singing performance.

Bülent Ceylan also joins in and together the two entertainers perform their very own version of last year's winning song "Zitti e buoni" - headbanging included, of course.

9:01 p.m .:

The Eurovision anthem sounds and certainly already triggers a good feeling in one or the other ESC fan.

Just like the unmistakable voice of ESC veteran Peter Urban, who is also allowed to accompany this year's preliminary decision as a commentator - how could it be otherwise.

Update from March 4, 9 p.m.:

Friday evening, 9 p.m.

The German preliminary round of the ESC begins.

In about an hour and a half we will know who will travel to Turin for Germany in May.

During the fundraiser for the Ukraine war, ARD switches to the studio of the ESC preliminary decision for the first time with moderator Barbara Schöneberger.

The presenter also talks about whether you should even host a TV show in times like these.

"A music show?

Does that have to be the case?” Schöneberger asks the question himself.

In any case, the moderator thinks so.

"The ESC stands for international understanding," she said.

It starts in less than ten minutes.

Update from March 4, 8:38 p.m .:

Tonight there is also an innovation for all fans of the Eurovision Song Contest.

The German preliminary round will also be broadcast live on the social media platform TikTok for the first time.

The transmission starts there at 8:50 p.m.

But analogue television is also slowly but surely preparing for the start of the show.

In the Insta story of the German ESC account you can see how the studio is already well filled.

So the spectators on site are ready to go.

ESC 2022: Ukraine conflict - German preliminary decision starts with a delay

Update from March 4th, 8:15 p.m .:

German ESC fans have to be patient until the preliminary decision “12 Points for Germany” begins.

The TV show was originally scheduled to start at 8:15 p.m.

As so often in the last few days, the focus of the public broadcasters is rightly on what is happening in Ukraine.

That's why it was announced in advance that the ESC preliminary round would start 45 minutes late at 9:00 p.m.

Until then, the first shows "We help - together for Ukraine".

ESC 2022: preliminary decision for Germany - online voting already over

Update from March 4th, 7.40 p.m .:

The online voting for the German preliminary decision for the ESC 2022 is in the final phase.

ESC fans can still vote for their favorites on the ARD Popwellen website until 8 p.m.

The viewers can decide about the other half during the show via phone call and text message.

ESC 2022: German preliminary decision in the context of the Ukraine crisis - star guest announced

Update from March 4, 7:07 p.m .:

The crisis that is currently taking place in Ukraine should also be an issue in the context of the German ESC preliminary decision tonight.

ARD announced at short notice that the Ukrainian singer Jamala, who won the ESC title for her home country in 2016, will appear on the TV show.

The 38-year-old will perform her winning song "1944", which deals with the deportation of her ancestors from the Crimean peninsula by the Soviet dictator Josef Stalin.

Afterwards, there will be a discussion with moderator Barbara Schöneberger on the current situation in Ukraine.

Jamala had to flee the crisis area in Ukraine with her children a few days ago.

ESC 2022: Return to Italy - who will represent Germany in Turin?

Original message from March 4th:

Hamburg – On May 14th of this year, the eyes of millions of enthusiastic music fans will be directed towards northern Italy, where the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 will take place.

At last year's edition, the Italian band Måneskin* was able to convince the audience not only with their extravagant appearance, but also with their sheer vocal power and brought the ESC to Italy for the third time in its history.

Turin 2022 follows Naples 1965 and Rome 1991. The fight for the European singing crown is on again.

ESC 2022: Germany in search of success - who is going to Turin?

From a German perspective, the ESC 2021 unfortunately joined the ever-growing list of failures that began after Lena's surprise victory in 2010 and the missed title defense in Düsseldorf in 2011.

Only fourth place for Michael Schulte in 2018 is one of the positive results in recent German ESC history.

Otherwise, in the past ten years, German representatives have twice reached the last place and three times the penultimate place.

Last year, Jendrik* only got three points for the single "I Don't Feel Hate", only not finishing last because the UK couldn't score a single point.

ESC preliminary decision 2022 live: Six acts are fighting for the ticket to Italy

However, the last few years have already shown that Germany cannot be deterred by poor rankings at the ESC.

Wipe your mouth and keep going seems to be the motto again in 2022 and so the Federal Republic of Germany is again looking for a suitable representation in Turin this year.

A tried and tested model is used.

After the German participants were selected by a jury of experts in the past two years and could not be chosen by the TV viewers, a preliminary decision will be made again this year.

"Germany 12 Points": German preliminary decision live - these six acts want to go to ESC 2022

Starting at 9 p.m. this Friday, six acts will be fighting for a ticket to Turin and the unique opportunity to represent Germany at the ESC.

Even if the pre-selection of the six participants in the preliminary decision was again made by a jury, the decision is now entirely in the hands of the spectators.

All ESC fans have been able to vote for their favorites on the websites of the nine ARD* pop waves since February 28th.

Voting closes at 8 p.m.

  • Malik Harris*

  • Mal & Jonas

  • Felicia Lu

  • Eros Atomus

  • Emily Roberts

  • Nico Suave & Team love

On Friday evening from 9 p.m. all six acts can once again present their contributions to the TV viewers.

You can then continue to vote in the classic way by calling or texting.

After that, whoever has received the most votes goes to Turin.

The "Germany 12 Points" show will be moderated by ESC veteran Barbara Schöneberger*, supported by her guests Thomas Hermanns, Bülent Ceylan, Jane Comerford and the Austrian ESC winner Conchita Wurst.

Preliminary decision for the ESC live: the appearance of the surprise guest is eagerly awaited

The appearance of a surprise guest announced shortly in advance could also ensure a very special moment.

The singer Jamala, who won the ESC* for Ukraine in 2016, will appear on the TV show on Friday evening.

Just days after the 38-year-old was forced to flee her home country due to the Russian invasion.
