President Yitzhak Herzog and his wife Michal will leave on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, for an official visit to Turkey, at the invitation of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The president will visit Ankara, where he will be received at a state reception in the palace of the Turkish president, and in Istanbul - where he will meet with members of the Jewish community.
Herzog is the first Israeli leader to visit Turkey since 2008, and the first Israeli president to visit the country since 2003. When the president took office, the Turkish president called to greet him, a conversation that led to a resumption of dialogue between the two countries after years of disengagement.
During the visit, coordinated with the Prime Minister, the Foreign Minister and their offices, the leaders will discuss the relations between the countries and the potential for increasing cooperation on various issues between the countries and the peoples.

Last week Herzog flew on state visits to Greece and Cyprus, at the invitation of the presidents of the two countries.
The visits were intended to convey a message about the importance of relations with the two countries, despite the restoration of relations with Turkey.
According to political sources, the Turks were informed in advance of Herzog's intention to visit Greece and Cyprus and even welcomed it.
Erdogan unilaterally announced about a month ago that President Herzog would visit his country by mid-February.
He defined the planned visit as a "new page" to be opened by the two countries.
The announcement comes after Erdogan revealed at a press conference a week earlier that contacts were being held with Herzog on the matter.
