Corona pandemic, supply chain difficulties, lack of chips - the automotive industry has been badly hit.

Nevertheless, the number of registrations in the Weilheim-Schongau district rose again.

District – On December 31, 2021, a total of 137,713 vehicles were registered in the Weilheim-Schongau district, 1,302 more than twelve months previously.

This was reported by the Weilheim-Schongau district office at the request of the local newspaper.

In purely mathematical terms, there are more vehicles than residents in the district.

However, the increase in newly registered vehicles was also quite moderate last year.

3706 vehicles - from small cars to trucks and buses - were put on the road in the district for the first time in 2021.

In 2020 there were 3232 vehicles, i.e. 474 fewer.

At that time, however, the car dealerships were also completely closed for weeks during the lockdowns.

If you take a closer look at the figures provided by the district, it quickly becomes clear that the national trend with more and more fully or partially electrified drives is also reflected in the registration statistics in the district.

Diesel vehicles are increasingly on the retreat

562 purely electric vehicles were newly registered between Wielenbach and Ingenried last year, plus another 567 hybrid vehicles.

I mean: almost a third of all new registrations last year were electric or hybrid vehicles.

The once dominant diesel vehicles are meanwhile increasingly on the retreat.

While in 2020 there were still 904 diesels that were new on the road, in 2021 there were just 800 newly registered.

For classification: The 6721 trucks that are registered in the district have a diesel quota of almost 100 percent.

The situation is similar with the 94 buses, even though some fully electric city buses were used in Weilheim this year.

If you subtract all new trucks (263) and buses (1) from the 800 newly registered diesel vehicles, it becomes clear that the electric drives are now well ahead of the diesel in the normal cars that were newly registered.

Nevertheless, with 1,777 new registrations in 2021, petrol-powered vehicles still make up the majority of the cars that came onto the roads.

Growth also in hybrid vehicles

Despite this, the trend towards e-mobility is continuing, and the growth rates are clear.

In 2020 there were still 237 purely electric vehicles that were newly registered, in 2021 this will more than double to 562.

Hybrid vehicles, which usually have a smaller battery and a petrol engine in order to be able to cover at least short distances electrically, are also growing, but not nearly as dynamically as with purely electric vehicles.

While 401 hybrid vehicles were newly registered in 2020, there were 567 in 2021.

Precise conclusions as to whether electric drives will establish themselves permanently on the market cannot, of course, be reliably derived from these figures.

On the one hand, the providers of electric vehicles are currently benefiting from the sharp rise in fuel prices, on the other hand, the immense subsidies of up to 9,000 euros per electric car and up to 6,000 euros per plug-in hybrid also play a decisive role in the purchase decision for many.

If you look at the entire fleet of vehicles in the Weilheim-Schongau district, it quickly becomes clear that electric drives still have a niche existence on the roads in the district.

A total of 1,506 purely electric vehicles are registered in the district, plus another 2,376 hybrid vehicles.

For comparison: 48,139 diesel vehicles are currently on the road.
