Progress in the Citizenship Law: The Purpose - Pre-Holiday Approval Israel today

2022-03-06T21:32:49.881Z

A stormy week is expected in the Knesset, just before the end of the winter session and the recess • The goal of the coalition: maximum promotion of legislation

The Citizenship Law, which has become a symbol of one of the main problems in a coalition consisting of right-wing factions and left-wing and Arab parties, is moving towards a conclusion and will probably reach a vote before the recess next week.

The law is currently under discussion in the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, and yesterday the parties moved towards closing details.

The person conducting the discussions on the subject is the committee's chairman, MK Ram Ben Barak, Mish Atid and Simcha Rotman from Religious Zionism.

MK Maoz is threatening

As you may recall, the law was passed as a result of an unusual move in which the opposition and the coalition voted to support an agreed wording, despite opposition from Meretz and RAAM. The time in one year only, as also agreed in the government law on which the parties work.

Another issue discussed is the purpose clause that discusses the meaning of expanding the law as a national security law.

MK Simcha Rotman told Israel Today: "I hope that all the Zionist factions in the Knesset will unite to pass a balanced citizenship law and join me in preserving the protective wall of the State of Israel."

Meanwhile, as published yesterday in "Israel Today", the flagship law of New Hope, the law restricting tenure, which last week attracted Justice Minister Gideon Saar because he did not have a majority, also encountered difficulties this week.

MK Avi Maoz of Religious Zionism is ill in Corona, and yesterday it was agreed that he would be offset, meaning the law that needs 61 fingers could not pass. MK Maoz threatened to come to the Knesset if he was not offset: "With the opposition regarding the offsetting of the sick Knesset members in Corona. If Saar refuses to offset me, I will exercise my right to vote in the Knesset while I am verified."

It is possible that in the end the vote will be rejected.

A flood of legislation

At the same time, as stated next Sunday, the Knesset will sign the winter session and take a break until the beginning of May.

A fact that leaves three more days for passing laws in the Knesset plenum, which operates Monday-Wednesday.

The coming week is expected to be characterized by Bezeq legislation, and later on the opposition is expected to oppose the coalition's laws and vice versa.
