The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine has been going on for days - and hundreds of thousands are demonstrating worldwide for an end to the violence.

In Russia, too, there is resistance to President Vladimir Putin's campaign.

According to the human rights organization OVD-Info, there have now been several hundred arrests in various cities across the country.

According to this, at least 230 people were arrested in the course of protests against the war in the central Russian city of Novosibirsk alone.

According to OVD-Info, there were at least 83 arrests in Krasnoyarsk, east of Novosibirsk, 88 in Yekaterinburg, 63 in Irkustsk, 21 in Vladivostok and at least 43 in Perm.

In total, there are more than 600 people affected in more than 21 cities.

The portal corrected the total number upwards several times in the morning (German time).

OVD-Info records reports of arrests in the course of protests against what Russia calls a "military operation" in Ukraine, and publishes the names of those affected.

The information cannot be independently verified.

According to the Reuters news agency, the Russian police could not immediately be reached for comment.

Since the beginning of the war, however, the Russian authorities have been taking tougher action against critics.

Navalny called for protests

The imprisoned critic of the Russian government, Alexei Navalny, had called for global protests against the war this Sunday - including in Russia.

Such rallies are forbidden there.

Hundreds of thousands of people around the world protested against the Russian invasion on Saturday.

Several thousand people gathered in Paris and Zagreb, tens of thousands of demonstrators were reported from Hamburg and Zurich, and thousands took part in a peace procession in Rome.

There were also demonstrations outside of Europe: Thousands of people took to the streets in the US east coast metropolis of New York.

It is the second weekend that organizations and trade unions in numerous cities have called for protests against the war in Ukraine.

Hundreds of thousands of people across Europe took to the streets last weekend, including a few thousand in Russia, over 100,000 in Berlin, 70,000 in Prague and 40,000 in Madrid.
