Chinese Foreign Minister: Resolving the crisis in Ukraine requires calm and rationality

Today, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced his country's readiness to continue playing a constructive and effective role in promoting talks between Russia and Ukraine, noting that resolving the Ukrainian crisis requires calm and rationality.

"Calm and rationality rather than moves that add fuel to the fire and escalate tensions are necessary to solve complex problems," Wang was quoted by Xinhua as saying at a press conference on the sidelines of the annual meeting of the 13th National People's Congress, China's top legislature.

Wang stressed the need to continue to adhere to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, respect and protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, adhere to the principle of indivisible security, respect the legitimate security concerns of relevant parties, rely on dialogue, negotiation and peaceful means to resolve the conflict, with a view to achieving long-term regional stability, and forging a balanced European security mechanism Effective and sustainable.

Wang noted China's readiness to continue playing a constructive role in facilitating Russian-Ukrainian peace talks and working with the international community to mediate as needed, stressing the need to focus efforts in this regard and prevent a large-scale humanitarian crisis.

China had confirmed earlier that imposing sanctions on Russia "blindly" and creating confrontation would further complicate the situation in Ukraine, while Wang stressed yesterday the need for the United States, NATO and the European Union to engage in dialogue with Russia on an equal basis and establish a mechanism to ensure security in Europe. He indicated that Beijing's position on this issue is consistent, as the legitimate security concerns of each country must be respected, and the objectives and principles of the United Nations Charter must be adhered to.
