European Council President Charles Michel announced that Ukraine's membership in the European Union will soon be discussed.
And the Italian Aki news agency quoted Michel as saying on his Twitter account, after a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, preceded by another call with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, that "Ukraine's accession request to the European Union will be presented for discussion in the coming days."
In turn, Bloomberg Agency quoted diplomatic sources as saying that Germany, the Netherlands and several European countries oppose granting Ukraine the status of a candidate this week in order to join the European Union.
The sources pointed out that some countries see the need to focus on supporting and assisting Kyiv, rather than embarking on a process that may take several years.
Putin called on Michel, during the phone call that took place between them, to make a real contribution to saving people and forcing the Kyiv authorities to respect the law and human rights.
The Russian President briefed the President of the European Union Council on Russia's position, the progress of the process in Ukraine, and his assessment of the progress of negotiations with the delegation representing Ukraine.
