Former Finance Minister Avraham Hirchson passed away today (Monday) at the age of 81.



Hirchson served as a Knesset member for a short period in the 1980s, and again from 1992 to 2006. He was a member of the Likud and Kadima factions.

He served as Minister of Tourism and Communications in the Sharon and Olmert governments, and was eventually appointed Minister of Finance.

In his public roles over the years he has also served as chairman of the National Health Fund and chairman of the Life March.

In 2009, Hirchson was convicted of stealing NIS 1.8 million from the National Workers' Federation (above) fund, which he headed, as well as money laundering, fraud and breach of trust and false registration in corporation documents. In addition, he was convicted of receiving illegal holiday grants, stealing money to finance drugs and stealing by receiving money in preparation for his travels abroad.



In July 2011, the Supreme Court rejected Hirchson's appeal of the ruling, in which he admitted receiving monthly payments and grants from the National Workers' Union, but argued that it was not a theft but a "kind of salary" based on compensation money to which he was entitled. He ran about 5.5 years in prison and was released from prison in 2015.
