In 2021, however, vacations in Germany were not in as much demand as in the first Corona year, 2020. This is shown by the most recent travel analysis by the research association Holidays and Travel (FUR), which is based on surveys of around 14,000 people.

It's different in Bavaria: According to FUR, Germans made around 3.8 million vacation trips here last year, lasting five days or longer.

In 2020 there were around 4.6 million, in 2019 only around 3.2 million.

Around 3.5 million holiday trips were made to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in 2021 (2020: 3.8; 2019: 3.6), to Schleswig-Holstein around 3.2 million (2020: 3.6; 2019: 2.9) and around 2.4 million to Lower Saxony (2020: 2.6; 2019: 2.4).

Baden-Württemberg completes the top five federal states with around 1.9 million vacation trips of five days or more last year (2020: 2.0; 2019: 1.4).

Still significantly less travel than before Corona

However, the total number of all vacation trips shows that the pre-corona level is far from being reached.

According to FUR, there were

That was around 5 million more than in 2020 (around 50.5 million), but still 15 million fewer than in 2019, when around 70.8 million trips were counted.

This is mainly due to the fact that the proportion of holiday trips abroad in 2021 was still well below the pre-Corona level.

However, last year there were slowly signs of a trend reversal: foreign travel destinations increased significantly.
