The traffic light coalition has made significantly more climate protection.

It was clear from the start that it would cost the right amount.

Now Lindner and Habeck fill the pot for the first time.

Berlin - The federal government wants to invest around 200 billion euros in climate protection by 2026.

Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) and Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) agreed on this in the negotiations on the 2022 budget and planning for the following years.

"In the years up to 2026, we will use a volume of around 200 billion euros," said Lindner on Monday in Berlin.

On Sunday he had already mentioned this sum in the ARD program "Report from Berlin".

Lindner listed what should be financed with the money: reducing CO2 emissions in industry, strengthening the hydrogen economy, building charging stations for electric cars.

"And we will relieve the burden on citizens and the economy with the EEG surcharge." That alone will cost up to 50 billion euros.

The coalition had previously agreed that the EEG surcharge should disappear from electricity bills in the summer and instead be paid through the federal budget.

This was originally planned for next year, but was brought forward due to the impact of high energy prices.

All in all, according to Lindner, it is not just about investments in the energy transition, but about the "transformation of the economy and society in a comprehensive sense".

In the ARD, the FDP boss emphasized that he was now looking forward to proposals to speed up planning law and reduce bureaucracy so that these "huge resources" could be used sensibly.

90 billion euros more

According to reports, the federal government has significantly increased the budget plan presented by the old black-red coalition.

"The previous planning of GroKo was 110 billion," said Green leader Omid Nouripour.

"We talked about the fact that far more money is needed, and we have also achieved that 60 billion have been budgeted.

And now the rest is on top of that.” Lindner had already shifted 60 billion euros into the energy and climate fund, which were approved as corona loans but not exhausted last year.

"This is a decent increase, which is extremely important at the moment and shows that we want to invest intelligently," said State Secretary for Economic Affairs Oliver Krischer of the "Rheinische Post" (Tuesday).

One must become less dependent on gas, coal and oil from Russia.

The Green politician announced: "The new money will be used in many ways: for more renewable energies for heating and to accelerate the energy transition."

Green party leader Katharina Dröge described the 200 billion as a "great success and an important part of a comprehensive security policy".

The Russian war of aggression in Ukraine has increased the urgency to invest in energy sovereignty and independence from fossil fuels now, she said on Sunday evening.

It is important that the federal government initiate many measures to get away from coal, oil and gas as quickly as possible, to reduce consumption and to invest in energy policy security.
