The Governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro Pierluisi, announced this Monday that, by decree, as of March 10, the mandatory use of a mask in indoor or outdoor areas will be eliminated on the island, with some exceptions.

Pierluisi explained in a press release that “the mandate for the use of masks in health facilities, such as hospitals, emergency rooms, doctor's offices, health centers, clinics, laboratories and pharmacies, is maintained.

Also, that mandate is maintained in long-term care homes for the elderly.

The governor reported on the new decree from La Fortaleza, in Old San Juan, together with Carlos Mellado, secretary of the Puerto Rico Department of Health.

"As you know, the statistics of covid-19 in terms of hospitalizations have dropped considerably and we can already say that our health system is not compromised," said Pierluisi.

Under this new decree, the Government gives the Department of Health the authority to require the use of masks in other circumstances as a measure to prevent the spread of covid-19.

It also indicates that each public or private boss or operator will have the freedom to implement different health measures, including requesting the mandatory use of masks.

On the other hand, the authorities reported the elimination of restrictions related to capacity in public and private places.

Under the new decree, the requirement to ask for vaccination or negative test in restaurants and service centers is eliminated.

"However, each operator of such establishments, at their discretion, may implement the health measures that they understand correspond to their type of operation, including screening their visitors," says part of the governor's press release.

Mass activities will be allowed, but the Department of Health will be in charge of coordinating protocols for activities of more than 1,000 people.

Also, as of March 10, those who visit Puerto Rico will no longer have to fill out the Traveler's Declaration or present proof of vaccination. The airports will maintain genomic surveillance and covid-19 testing centers until the Department of Health requires it.

“I am not removing the emergency declaration, and I will be watching any developments in case changes need to be made.

For the time being, the Department of Health will have the responsibility to promote or recommend any additional changes,” Pierluisi said.
