The EU is dealing with Ukraine's application for membership.

But it will take a while before he comes to a decision.

Kyiv/Brussels - Ukraine wants to join the EU.

The European Union* has now started examining Ukraine's application for membership.

The ambassadors of the EU countries agreed in Brussels to obtain an initial statement from the EU Commission* on the candidate status for Ukraine, as the French Council Presidency announced on Monday.

The applications from Georgia and Moldova should also be examined.

The three former Soviet states officially applied to join the EU after Russia invaded Ukraine.

EU accession: lengthy procedures until recognition

The EU accession procedures are lengthy and involve a large number of steps.

According to the EU treaty, candidate countries must meet numerous criteria.

They range from the stability of state institutions and the rule of law to a functioning market economy.

The EU currently has 27 members.

The European Economic Community laid the cornerstone for the EU in 1957.

The EEC was founded by Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and the Federal Republic of Germany.

From then on, more and more European countries were added.

The latest newcomers were Romania and Bulgaria (both 2007) and Croatia (2013).

Current accession candidates are Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey - as well as Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine.
