There are numerous civilian casualties in the Ukraine war.
In addition to the capital Kyiv, heavy fighting also broke out in Mariupol and other cities.
Kyiv/Mariupol – Also on Monday night (March 7th, 2022) there were fierce battles between Russia and Ukraine in the Ukraine conflict*.
The port city of Mariupol in the east of the country is particularly hotly contested.
Many people are also on the run.
An overview.
Ukraine War: Russia bombs Kharkiv
In Kharkiv, Russia's air force continued bombing.
Similar to Kyiv* in the past week, the technical infrastructure was also attacked there.
According to reports from the Ukrainian armed forces, the local television tower was damaged in the attacks.
The TV transmission was therefore temporarily canceled, according to the Kharkiv military administration.
This is reported by the Unian news agency.
But not only infrastructure was fired at.
The AFP news agency reports that blocks of flats and parts of the university were also hit.
The Ukrainian domestic secret service SBU also announced that Russia* had shot at a research center.
It probably contains atomic material, among other things.
According to an official warning, a rocket launcher hit could trigger an environmental disaster.
The Russian Ministry of Defense replied to the intelligence information that Ukraine* wanted to blow up the research center in order to cause a disaster itself.
However, both claims could not be verified independently.
Ukraine War: Russia's ground forces attack Sumy and Mykolayev
Meanwhile, ground forces of the Russian army attacked the city of Sumy in the north-east and the city of Mykolayev in the south of the country.
However, according to the Ukrainian General Staff, Russia is still concentrating on the siege of the capital Kyiv.
Moscow is gathering its “resources for an attack”.
Ukraine continued to prepare: "If we get the order from above or see that the Russians are advancing, we will blow them up," a member of a volunteer unit told AFP.
Irpin, a small town near Kyiv, was also shelled over the weekend.
The New York Times reported that mortar shells were used there by Russian forces.
According to the report, several people were killed.
Ukraine war: situation in Mariupol comes to a head
Regardless of the siege of Kyiv, the situation is most acute in Mariupol in eastern Ukraine.
There, the Russian army has been besieging the city limits together with separatist groups for days.
There have already been dozens of warnings of food shortages, including electricity and water shortages.
A second evacuation attempt in Mariupol failed on Sunday.
Only 300 people were able to leave the port city.
Actually, there should be tens of thousands.
It was heard from both the Ukrainian and Russian sides that the agreed ceasefire had not been observed.
Numerous people remained on the streets during the night on Monday, worried about new attacks by Russia.
Ukraine war: 1.5 million people on the run
On Sunday evening, the UN refugee agency also published a new estimate of refugees from Ukraine.
In the meantime, 1.5 million people are said to have fled.
"This is now the fastest growing refugee crisis since World War II," UNHCR said.
