The successes of the feminist movement cannot be overshadowed by the division that it will exhibit today in the street

The feminist struggle has exhibited in the last half century an extraordinary capacity for social transformation.

The conquests of women have implied higher levels of social justice and substantial civilizational progress both for them and for men.

There have been far-reaching legislative changes in equal pay, sexual and reproductive freedom and sexist violence.

One in four women between the ages of 15 and 49 suffers, according to the World Health Organization, physical or sexual violence by her partner.

Compared to 27% of the global average, the percentage in Central Europe is 16% and in Spain, 15%.

Any degree of violence is unacceptable, but the data indicates progress that invites us to persist and intensify the battle.

Today this newspaper has wanted to peek at the moment when inequality begins to take shape, at the causes that experts point out for the patterns to reproduce in our young people.

It has done so based on two data: many of our children have a first approach to porn at the age of eight, just by unlocking an adult's mobile.

There already begins a configuration of sexual-affective relationships.

The second data is offered by the 2019 macro-survey on sexist violence by the Ministry of Equality: control of the partner by the man affects one in four girls between the ages of 16 and 17 and amounts to 63.5% when expanding the range of age up to 24 years.

Inequality is a multifactorial and transversal phenomenon.

The pandemic has once again shown that crises affect women more because they suffer higher rates of precariousness and temporary employment than men.

To reduce the wage gap, it is not enough that the regulations require equal pay for equal work.

It is necessary to intervene on working conditions that, differentially, negatively affect women.

And also about a pre-existing social condition: the enormous disproportion in the social burden of care and attention to any type of dependency, which falls fundamentally on women and worsens every time a crisis reduces social services or postpones access to education at early ages.

All this explains why, despite the laws, progress in equalization is so slow.

The advances are enormous but also the challenges.

In Spain we are witnessing a deep division of the feminist movement that the 8-M of 2018 astonished the world.

For the first time, the demonstrations on March 8 will have two calls and two routes in many Spanish cities.

The central cause of the division is the differences around

trans law

and the free determination of sex, but this year also a discussion that comes from far away: how to deal with prostitution.

The commitment of the PSOE to promote a law on this last matter before the end of the legislature has polarized like never before the supporters of the complete abolition of a reality that enslaves millions of women with the supporters of a regularization that protects prostitutes.

The confrontation has radicalized to the point of total rupture and has weakened the women's struggle at a time of strong reaction against the extreme right.
