A jury finds guilty the first defendant who was tried for the assault on the Capitol

The first person tried for the violent attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 was found guilty this Tuesday by a jury of all the charges against him in Washington DC

Guy Reffitt, a Texan who stormed the Capitol armed with a pistol, was found guilty on all five charges, including carrying a firearm in furtherance of civil disorder and obstructing an official proceeding.

Jurors began deliberating Tuesday morning after a week-long trial in which they heard testimony from Reffitt's teenage son, Jackson Refitt, who tipped off the FBI about his father before the Jan. 6 attack.

This Tuesday it was also learned that Henry Tarrio, former leader of the neo-Nazi group Proud Boys, was arrested for his organization's role in planning the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Although Tarrio, 38, is not charged with physically participating in the assault, the federal indictment alleges that he "directed pre-planning and remained in contact with other members of the Proud Boys during the assault," according to a statement released Tuesday. Tuesday by the Department of Justice.

Tarrio was arrested in Miami and must appear for the first time before the Florida Southern District Court.

He was also named in an indictment filed Monday in the District of Columbia that also includes five previously charged defendants.

The indictment alleges that Tarrio continued to lead and encourage the Proud Boys before and during the events of January 6, and that he took credit for what happened on social media and in an encrypted chat group during and after the attack. .

Tarrio was charged with one count of conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding and obstructing an official proceeding, as well as two counts of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officials, and destruction of official property.

More than 775 people have been arrested in nearly all 50 states for crimes related to the attack on Capitol Hill, including more than 245 people charged with assault or impeding law enforcement, according to the Justice Department.

Conspiracy charges have also been filed against Elmer Stewart Rhodes, founder of the far-right militia group Oath Keepers, and 10 others.
