After a case of avian influenza in Zolling, the district office warns: It is essential to comply with the strict measures to protect against further spread!

A current case of avian influenza – also known as bird flu – has been officially confirmed in the Freising district.

This was announced on Tuesday by the Freising district office.

The national reference laboratory at the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute has detected the avian influenza virus type H5N1 in an owl from the municipality of Zolling, reports spokesman Robert Stangl.

To protect against further spread and in particular to protect domestic and commercial poultry, the Freising district office advises all poultry farmers to strictly adhere to the increased biosecurity measures already ordered on December 9, 2021 for the entire Freising district.

Hobby breeders also have to be careful

Stangl: "The corresponding general decree stipulates, among other things, a ban on displaying poultry, a ban on feeding certain wild birds and increased biosecurity measures for the entire district of Freising." Keeping and preventing contact between domestic poultry and wild birds could prevent the introduction of the pathogen and the resulting necessary measures: compulsory stables or even the killing of the stock.

All poultry farmers - including hobby keepers - are obliged to consistently comply with these hygiene and biosecurity measures.

As a precautionary measure, the Freising district office asks all poultry farmers to prepare for animal welfare-friendly housing for their animals as part of a stabling obligation.

If more positive birds were found, this would be "essential" to protect domestic and commercial poultry, emphasizes Stangl.

Also important: In principle, H5N1 is considered “potentially dangerous” for humans, but infections are extremely rare.

So far there has been no known case of human infection via wild birds or their excrements in Germany.

All citizens are asked to report dead birds found to the veterinary office in Freising, the respective municipality or the police, stating the location (ideally with coordinates).

The dead birds should not be touched or moved.
