Update from March 8, 2:12 p.m .:

The Ukraine conflict was also a topic at today’s meeting of the Bavarian cabinet.

"The situation in Ukraine is shocking," said Head of State Florian Herrmann (CSU) at a press conference afterwards.

Diplomacy is no longer working, he continued.

Therefore, one would now face four challenges in Bavaria:

  • Humanitarian aid is needed on site or at the border with Ukraine.

  • Bavaria has to deal with the issues of migration and refugees.

  • The sanctions must be continued and perhaps expanded.

  • The Bundeswehr must be sensibly modernized.

"We're talking about the largest refugee movement since the end of the Second World War," Herrmann continued.

Overall, the UNHCR expects

(United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) four million refugees from Ukraine.

Yesterday alone, 10,000 people from the war-torn country arrived in Bavaria and the number is increasing every day, Herrmann continues.

Bavaria also wants to continue to influence the federal government when it comes to military and energy prices.

The promised 100 billion euros for the Bundeswehr should be distributed quickly and, above all, unbureaucratically.

"The device must arrive at the troops," said the head of the state chancellery.

In addition, North Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria want to persuade the federal government to reduce energy and electricity taxes.

"These are the two screws that the federal government can turn," said Herrmann in his speech.

Ukraine war: Interior Minister Herrmann expects more than 100,000 refugees

Update from March 8, 9:47 a.m.:

According to Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, more than 100,000 refugees from Ukraine could come to Bavaria.

"In any case, we have to be prepared for this," said the CSU politician on Tuesday on the radio station Bayern 2 of the

Bayerischer Rundfunk.

Last Wednesday he still assumed around 50,000 refugees.

Markus Söder had already stated the day before that this number will probably be exceeded (see previous update).

At a switching conference on Monday evening with the Bavarian district administrators and mayors, it was agreed to quickly provide emergency accommodation in sports halls, inns or youth hostels, for example.

"We will use every opportunity," said Herrmann.

Bavaria will fully reimburse the municipalities for the costs of the refugees, said Herrmann.

"But we do indeed expect the federal government to share the costs accordingly." If necessary, this would have to be negotiated with the Federal Chancellor at the level of the Prime Minister.

"Unfortunately, the federal government has not yet commented on this."

Ukraine war: Söder expects an even higher number of refugees - "There will also be a lot of children alone"

Update from March 7, 10:50 a.m .:

The Bavarian state government assumes tens of thousands of Ukraine refugees who will have to be accommodated in the Free State in the next few weeks.

"I think the number of 50,000* will be exceeded," said CSU leader Markus Söder on Monday before a meeting of the party executive in Munich.

Bavaria's Prime Minister said that temporary accommodation options would have to be prepared in many municipalities and church institutions.

It will be a challenge to accommodate the many children.

In many cases, women fled with their children.

"There will also be a lot of children alone," said Söder.

It is very likely that large cities such as Munich, Nuremberg and Augsburg will initially be the starting points.

Söder called on the federal government to create a coordination council that would ensure a reasonable distribution of people across the federal states.

It also requires financial support from the federal government for states and municipalities.

Ukraine war: Söder dampens hopes of successful negotiations - "There is only one strategy"

Ukraine war: Söder dampens hopes for successful negotiations - "brings no result at all"

Negotiations between Russia and Ukraine should continue on Monday.

However, hopes of success are low as Vladimir Putin has made it a condition that Kyiv must accept all of Moscow's demands, including Ukraine's demilitarization and a neutral status for the country.

Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) is also under no illusions: "We must be clear: every conversation that is currently being held will not bring any result at all.

There is only one strategy: help for Ukraine on the one hand and strengthening of NATO on the other.

Söder was involved there.

Ukraine war: Söder criticizes Putin - CSU boss praises Scholz government

Addressing the Russian President: “Threatening nuclear weapons is not a sign of strength.

It's a sign of weakness." Chancellor Olaf Scholz*'s decision to invest significantly more money in the Bundeswehr was praised again by Bavaria's Prime Minister.

He had said something similar in the days before: "The new line of the federal government has our full support," he said on Instagram on February 27th.

Escape from Ukraine: Desperation and Hope

The situation in Ukraine is dramatic.

A woman described her escape from Kyiv*, meanwhile she has arrived safely in Nuremberg.

More and more supermarkets are reacting to the Ukraine conflict.

Several Edeka markets in Bavaria are taking Russian products out of their range.* You can read about how you can help with donations of money and goods and what help is still needed in our overview.*
