New book focuses on coexistence of trauma and afterlife for sexual assault survivors

Qiu Zhiheng, senior research director of Feng Yulan, pointed out that in some cases, the victim had disclosed to professionals and family members that he had been sexually assaulted. The victim suffered secondary injuries.

Qiu pointed out that the cases involved being violated by acquaintances and even family members, and it happened continuously. The victim's childhood experience of being victimized, his decision to seek help, the result of seeking help, and the experience of seeking help when he grew up are all very important. Their healing process is also full of twists and turns. Therefore, more people need to be involved in the work against sexual violence.

Wang Xiurong, director general of Feng Yulan, said that the new book "Survivor's Words: Oral Stories of Nine Childhood Sexual Assault Survivors" is an extension of research over the past years, and hopes to present different aspects of survivors' life stories to the public.

She pointed out that although there have been studies and publications on the issue of childhood sexual abuse in Hong Kong in the past, there has been a lack of local textual materials focusing on the life stories of survivors. Therefore, the book adheres to the concept of survivors. Instead of focusing on the process of sexual assault, it described the survivors' lives after the incident, documenting their coexistence with trauma.

"Because for survivors, perhaps more important is not how to get hurt, but how to live a good life."

The victim was continuously violated by his cousin at the age of ten: I will never forget it

Pema, who tells the story through "Survivor's Words", is a post-80s generation. She was raped by her cousin for the first time at the age of 10. Although she asked her mother for help very early, her mother did not seem to understand and neither asked nor helped her. Indirectly caused Pema to continue to be sexually assaulted.

Pema pointed out, "Invisible scars are not easier to remove than physical scars", describing that she was very disappointed with adults at the time, and the incident still affects her relationship with her family, "I don't think I will forget it after 20 years, 𠵱My family thinks I will never forget it for the rest of my life." Pema sent a message to all parents, because children may not know how to express clearly, they should be more sensitive and patient to listen to them on weekdays.

A Yin, who is a "post-00", was raped by her father for the first time at the age of 11. "Many people will be asked to explain the details when they become adults, and they will not tell them when they are questioned." Afterwards, I can let everyone know that people who were sexually abused in their childhood have different difficulties when they ask for help, and because of various reasons, they "can't tell", "Except if you can tell yourself, I am no longer the mere me, and I have the ability. Fight for yourself, and hope that the public will understand more after watching it, less criticism and blame, and other women can have the courage to ask for help.”
