Austria is suspending the obligation to vaccinate against the corona virus – at least temporarily.

The basis for the decision is a report by the expert commission.

Update from March 9, 9:29 a.m

.: Austria suspends the obligation to vaccinate against the corona virus.

The obligation to vaccinate is not proportionate to the prevailing Omicron variant, said Constitutional Minister Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) on Wednesday in Vienna.

The basis for the decision is the report of an expert commission.

A new decision should be made in three months, said Health Minister Johannes Rauch (Greens).

Vaccination has been compulsory since the beginning of February.

From March 15, violations of the obligation to vaccinate should be punished with fines of up to 3,600 euros.

During this phase, the police should check the proof of vaccination as part of their controls and report a violation to the authorities.

Meanwhile, the number of infections in Austria is increasing rapidly.

Vaccination obligation in Austria before the end?

Is vaccination now supposed to be history again?

That sounds a bit exaggerated.

But before the law is "sharpened" in Austria, and those who refuse to vaccinate face penalties, an expert commission should submit a report for evaluation.

The government has set up this vaccination commission.

Since February 17, four experts, two each from medicine and the judiciary, have been dealing with the law.

Above all, they check the proportionality of the law with regard to the current corona situation.

The law has been criticized since compulsory vaccination began.

Austria's Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) did not rule out an end.

Nehammer emphasized in various interviews that he wanted to stick to the recommendation of the expert council.

At that time, the expert commission did not even exist.

In addition to the criticism of the obligation to vaccinate, Zoff about vaccination checks, there are also problems with the implementation.

The Austrian newspaper

Der Standard reported on "technical ambiguities".

A central digital storage system to enter exceptional cases of compulsory vaccination would be missing.
