- For Thomas Bihler, chairman of the airport association, it was a matter of course not only to organize aid transports to the Ukraine, but also to get an idea of the situation on site.

Even before leaving, it was clear to him that he would help a family to escape.

"On Saturday morning I was at the Hungarian-Ukrainian border and reported to the camp there," reports Bihler.

Initially, he was supposed to take a family of five with him, but the car was too small for that.

"In the afternoon I was introduced to a mother with three children," said the chairman.

Opposite him stood 40-year-old Oksana with her children Bogdan (13), Kirill (9) and Artem (6) from Kharkiv.

Their destination: Mannheim, where family friends live.

After a night in the hotel we started on Sunday morning – towards Munich.

Bihler reports that the family is severely traumatized, especially the young mother.

"The husband and father is seriously wounded in the Kharkiv military hospital," reports the helper.

On the long drive west, Oksana burst into tears whenever a military vehicle came along.

"They urgently need psychological support," says Bihler.

Bihler is already looking ahead again.

"We are planning the second aid transport this week," he announces.

He himself wants to go there again.

His car shouldn't be empty again.

The experienced helper in international crises has one request: "No one should go there as a private person at random because it would only hinder the helpers." It is better to support the established organizations.
