Grand Paris: “anti-harassment” bookmarks distributed in the metro

2022-03-09T10:58:05.548Z

RATP and Île-de-France Mobilités are organizing awareness-raising operations in the Paris metro to help travelers take action

Even if they don't read or no longer read in the metro, users who received one of the thousands of bookmarks donated this Tuesday by RATP agents will be well advised to keep it... And to consult it.

The piece of cardboard that was massively distributed on lines 4, 6, 8 and 13 is much more than a bookmark.

It is a tool to fight against acts of harassment or sexist violence which transport users can unfortunately witness.

The 5 Ds: simple actions to remember

The document, whose further distributions are planned this week, sums up, in a few words, the method known as the 5 Ds of "Stand Up" training - an international program launched by L'Oréal Paris, the Women's Foundation and the NGO Hollaback — against street harassment.

The 5 Ds (for Distracting, Delegating, Documenting, Directing, Dialogue) are a series of very simple actions that can enable witnesses of situations of gender-based violence or harassment to put an end to it... Without aggressiveness or in danger.

A QR code at the bottom of the bookmark links to an application with scenario videos allowing you to learn, in a few minutes, the “tricks” to intervene.

The bookmark recalls the 5Ds, the possible behaviors to adopt to intervene in the event of harassment.

“These passenger awareness operations are essential,” insists Sandrine Charnoz, project manager against harassment in transport at the RATP, who came to attend the distribution campaign in Saint-Lazare.

"Contrary to what one might think, the typical sexist attack takes place during the day and in a train", explains the head of the RATP's dedicated service, which is strengthening its "arsenal" to fight against sexist attacks on the network. , since 2021.

"Do not leave the victims alone"

The 6,500 station and GPSR (RATP security service) agents have all been trained in how to deal with victims.

"It's crucial, to know how to reassure them, sometimes make them feel guilty and guide them in the best way to file a complaint...", testifies Kamel, one of the Saint-Lazare agents.

“We have also set up a system for calling back victims, two days after the events, to hear from them or possibly direct them for psychological support”, we continue at the management.

"There are many means of alert", adds Delphine Burkli, president of the commission for relations with users of Île-de-France Mobilités which supports the awareness-raising operation.

And the network managers mentioned the call terminals on the platforms (which are not reserved for reporting technical incidents), the emergency number 3117 (or 31177 by SMS) managed by the SNCF on behalf of all operators and can be contacted at all times or the use of station agents who are trained to take care of victims.

"The objective is not to leave the victims alone and to facilitate the filing of complaints", we conclude at the RATP as well as at IDFM, stressing that any requisitions of video surveillance images (destroyed after 72 hours ) must act quickly.

The subject is important.

According to data from the StandUp program, 80% of women have experienced sexual harassment in a public place.

A rate that would rise to 87% in transport according to a study by the National Federation of Transport User Associations.
