In appreciation of the role of women in building a healthy society, and on the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Mosaic Society for Relief and Human Development organized a celebration at the National Museum in Lattakia that included a number of activities, a craft exhibition, honoring successful women in society, a heritage choir and a representative scene expressing women’s suffering from domestic violence.

Dr. Omar Ballan, the assistant representative of the United Nations Population Fund and the Chargé d’Affairs, explained that the Syrian woman is an example of resilience and is appreciated by the United Nations Population Fund, stressing the interest in the women’s empowerment program by focusing on rehabilitation, training, providing expertise and services related to reducing domestic violence and motivating the amendment of laws biased against women.

Head of the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs, Eng. Samar Sebaei, indicated that the celebration comes within the “No to Violence” event, which highlights the complete rejection of domestic violence and how to deal with it in a way that contributes to empowering women, solving problems and resorting to psychological and legal counseling in a timely manner.

Dr. Sahar Jabbour, medical director of Mosaic Association, pointed out that the association has medical, educational and other programs to empower women and youth, referring to the organization of an exhibition of paintings serving the slogan (no to violence) and a workshop with a number of families to discuss how to reduce domestic violence through activation or modification New laws serving women, in addition to the establishment of a heritage choir and a representative scene between a battered woman, her husband, the lawyer and the judge, entitled (Together to Change the Law).

Maya Deratani from the World Food Program explained that the program has provided food vouchers to more than 6,017 pregnant and lactating women since 2019, in addition to providing food vouchers to support 800 class B students distributed in more than 35 schools in Lattakia Governorate.

Lama Ali, director of the Baytna Center, a project to support and empower women in partnership between the Mosaic Association and the United Nations Population Fund, indicated that the celebration included a craft exhibition consisting of handicrafts of women who were supported and trained through the Baytna Center, in addition to honoring the distinguished among them in appreciation of their achievements.

Daad Aji, head of the Ethar Charitable Society, considered this occasion to be an important occasion to honor the mothers of the martyrs, who proved that the Syrian woman is strong and can do the impossible. Souad Sinno is one of the pioneers of Baytna Association and a number of distinguished participants were given symbolic gifts.

In Raqqa governorate, the “Qamh Charitable Activities” and “Nibras Development” associations, in cooperation with the Directorate of Social Affairs and Labor in the governorate, shed light on the objectives of the “Don’t Silence” campaign launched by the Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs to publicize women’s rights and raise awareness of issues of violence, especially domestic violence, and to educate battered women about their rights. It is guaranteed by law and the services available to them in the family protection unit of the authority.

The Director of Social Affairs and Labor in Raqqa, Ahmed Al-Murshed, said in a statement to SANA reporter that the main objective of the campaign is to introduce and raise awareness of issues of violence, especially domestic violence, pointing out that the campaign includes awareness activities targeting various segments of society while continuing to provide services through the Family Protection Unit.
