For several days it has been rumored that Poland is delivering MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine via detours.
Now comes heavy criticism from Washington.
Warsaw/ Washington, DC - In the past few days, Poland has offered to send its MiG-29 fighter jets "free of charge and immediately" to the American base "Rammstein" in Rhineland-Palatinate.
This was announced by the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to media reports, the jets should then be delivered to Ukraine.
However, the Polish government ruled out direct deliveries of fighter jets to Ukraine.
It is also rumored that used American F-16 fighter jets will be delivered to Poland in return.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly asked for fighter jet support in recent days.
Ukraine war: Polish proposal “unsustainable”
US Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said at a hearing in the US Senate that the Polish government had not previously shared its proposal with the US administration.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby spoke of “serious concerns for the entire NATO alliance” with regard to the Polish proposal.
Kirby announces further talks with Poland.
In a tweet, however, he makes it clear that he believes the Polish proposal is untenable.
Annalena Baerbock warns against Polish plans
Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock warned on "Bild-TV" about deliveries of fighter jets to Ukraine.
The Green politician stressed that the Ukraine war must not spread to NATO countries.
Baerbock also warned against giving Russia a through ball by supplying offensive weapons.
It should not be said that NATO is taking part in the war.
