Many people fear the consequences of the Ukraine war in their own country.

According to the Minister responsible, the energy supply is secured.

But what comes after winter?

Stuttgart - Possible bottlenecks in the energy supply as a result of the Ukraine war are causing concern in the south-west.

"It's a serious situation," said Environment Minister Thekla Walker in the Stuttgart state parliament.

If deliveries from Russia were to be stopped at short notice, this would have serious consequences for the economy.

"At the moment, our energy supply is secured," assured the Green politician.

According to a recent survey, three quarters (74 percent) of all Baden-Württemberg residents are very worried about the negative effects of the war on the local economy.

The people in the country also fear that the economic situation in Germany could deteriorate.

71 percent think it is possible that there could be bottlenecks in the gas and energy supply across Germany, according to a representative survey published on Thursday by the opinion research institute Infratest dimap on behalf of SWR and "Stuttgarter Zeitung".

Walker said in the state parliament that rising energy prices were causing problems for citizens and the economy.

Gas storage tanks are relatively low, but you will get through the soon-to-be-ending winter.

Oil and coal are also currently sufficiently available.

In the discussion about a possible longer service life for nuclear power plants, Walker expressed his skepticism.

This does not have the effect of securing the energy supply in the current crisis.

The accelerated nuclear phase-out was passed by law in 2011.

The last reactors to be shut down are the Emsland, Isar 2 and Neckarwestheim 2 power plants in Baden-Württemberg at the latest on December 31. Raimund Haser, member of the CDU state parliament, said in the debate that Neckarwestheim had to be discussed in view of the high output of the power plant.

"It is neither sensible nor appropriate to let the nuclear power plants run longer," said Green MP Niklas Nüssle.

According to the survey, three quarters of those surveyed are in favor of the EU and the federal government sanctions against Russia - even if this increases energy and food prices (74 percent), there are bottlenecks in the energy supply (75 percent) or German companies suffer disadvantages (74 percent ).

Only a majority of AfD supporters do not support sanctions with correspondingly negative effects.

According to additional information, Russia supplies more than 50 percent of the natural gas consumed in Germany, and the share of Russian hard coal in electricity generation in Germany is around 50 percent.

According to Minister Walker, car-free Sundays could cut fuel consumption and reduce dependence on Russian energy imports.

“And why no speed limits or car-free Sundays like in the 1970s?

A success - at that time the oil consumption was greatly reduced," she told the German Press Agency.

In view of the oil crisis in 1973, the then federal government had decreed four car-free Sundays and a temporary speed limit - 100 kilometers per hour on freeways, 80 on country roads.

Walker went on to say that the federal government is making all necessary efforts to put the energy supply on a broader footing in order to become independent of gas, oil and coal from Russia as quickly as possible.

This includes the creation of reserves, the search for new delivery routes and the expansion of renewable energies, which she is driving forward.
