New Coronary Pneumonia・Deltacron・Omicron・Delta|The World Health Organization (WHO) stated on March 9 that the new coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) variant strains Omicron (Omicron) and Delta ( Delta), the virus strain Deltacron, was detected in very small numbers.

According to a press release published on the United Nations website on the 9th, Maria Van Kerkhove, WHO’s technical director of the new crown epidemic, said at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland that scientists have so far not seen this virus strain make the new crown pneumonia serious. any change in degree.

She said some research is underway on how infectious it is and how severe it can become.

A recent study by the Pasteur Institute in France found a virus recombined from Delta and Omicron.

These data and analyses provide definitive confirmation of a virus recombined from the GK/AY.4 (Delta) + GRA/BA.1 (Omicron) lineage.

The recombinant virus was found in several regions of France and has been circulating since early January 2022.

Notably, viral genomes with similar characteristics were also found in Denmark and the Netherlands.

Determining that a recombinant virus is derived from a single ancestor requires more investigation and analysis, or observation of more similar recombination events.

Van Kerckhoff tweeted that this was to be expected, especially given the explosive popularity of Omicron and Delta.

The WHO is following up and discussing this.

Pls also see here where we talk about the possibility of recombinants of #SARSCoV2. This is to be expected, especially w intense circulation of #omicron & delta. @WHO TagVE is tracking & discussing.

When the recombinant virus was previously named Deltacron, WHO officials had said it didn't really exist.

Van Kerckhoff said the WHO believed it was the result of contamination in the laboratory during the sequencing.

However, she clarified that it is possible for people to be infected with different strains of the new coronavirus.

On January 8, a research team from the University of Cyprus announced the discovery of a new mutant strain of the new coronavirus, calling it Deltacron.

Afterwards, some scientists questioned whether "there is really a (virus) virus."

Leondios Kostrikis, an expert leading the research team, said in an interview with the country's TV station Sigma TV on January 7 that it has Omicron-like genetic characteristics in the genome of the mutant virus strain Delta.

He also emphasized that Deltacron shares a similar genetic background with Delta, as well as some mutations from Omicron.

British media said on February 11 that the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) disclosed in its weekly updated test report that the first person infected with Deltacron appeared in the country.
