Language Alliance: The Druze Hebrew Language Program Israel today

Studios, a debate club and a summer camp with Hebrew-speaking students: The Ministry of Education is launching a new program for learning spoken Hebrew in the Druze sector.

At the center of the program, studios for learning Hebrew will be established.

Already this year, 17 studios were opened in the elementary schools, and next school year studios will be opened in all the elementary schools.

The goal of the program, led by Education Minister Yifat Shasha Bitton, is to strengthen the spoken Hebrew language among students of Druze society.

For the first time, the program will operate in all age groups, from kindergarten to 12, to produce an educational continuum, and will also include reference to Israeli culture and codes.

The program was formulated against the background of the gaps among Druze graduates in the field, and the difficulties they face when entering academia and competing for key positions in the employment market.

At the center of the program, as mentioned, studios will be established, in which sixth-graders will focus on Hebrew spoken by Israelis.

So far, 17 studios have opened in primary schools, and next year studios are expected to open in all primary schools (47 in number).

Students will also learn through a sixth-grade Hebrew applet, which was incorporated this year as a pilot in 25 elementary schools.

The Ministry of Education is preparing to expand the use of the widget in all schools over the next year, in accordance with the results of the outline.

The debate program (Maamat) is recognized in schools in the general sector, and students argue about it in English.

In the next school year in the eighth and ninth grades, there will be a discussion club with Hebrew-speaking teachers as a mother tongue.

The program will focus on imparting skills by raising arguments and presenting arguments in Hebrew.

Another project of the program concerns the "Gates Program", which will operate among ninth graders and will continue next year in tenth grades.

The students will go to a summer camp and meet with Israeli-Jewish youth for a whole week.

The sessions are designed to strengthen relationships and increase students' motivation to master the language well.

A tool for integration

Science studies in elementary and middle schools will also be conducted in the Hebrew language this year, having so far been conducted in Arabic.

In elementary grades 4-6, students will learn scientific vocabulary in Hebrew.
