South Korea fires warning shots at North Korean ship

South Korea seizes a North Korean boat with a crew of seven and fires warning shots.
Seoul - A North Korean boat was seized by South Korea in an incident at sea.
Seven crew members were also arrested, as reported by AFP.
A patrol boat from North Korea* then wanted to intervene.
South Korea then fired warning shots, a representative of the South Korean Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday (03/09/2022).
The incident happened on Tuesday morning (03/08/2022), one day before the presidential election in South Korea*.

The South Korean ministry official further explained that the North Korean patrol boat crossed the de facto maritime border off the west coast of the Korean peninsula while pursuing the other North Korean ship.
When a warning shot was fired, the patrol ship turned north.

South Korean authorities have questioned the seven crew members on the impounded ship.
According to the AFP news agency, there were no weapons on their boat.

The crew members said they crossed the sea border because of a navigation error, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reports.
They had "expressly called for a return" to the north.
The representative of the South Korean Ministry of Defense did not want to confirm this.

A patrol boat crossing the de facto maritime border between the two countries "inevitably has a political dimension because it happened on the eve of South Korea's presidential election," said Leif-Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul.
