Beginning of Ragnarök, according to the myth

In Norse mythology, Ragnarök will begin with a harsh season of snow and wind that will last for three years.

As resources rapidly dwindle, the Nine Kingdoms will become a chaotic struggle for survival.

In the end the Nine Kingdoms will fall into darkness;

even the stars will die out.

This will cause Yggdrasil's roots to tremble, causing mountains to be uprooted and trees to fall.

odin

Odin is one of the best known gods.

In several of the missions he will work to protect Asgard and eliminate the threats of Ragnarök.

According to Norse tradition, Odin is the one-eyed god of war and poetry.

He is credited with creating the world from the body of the slain giant Ymir, and naturally goes to great lengths to prevent Ragnarök's prophecy.

In preparation for this moment, Odin has his Valkyries transport the souls of the dead warriors to Valhalla, intending them to become his army, called the Einherjar.

He also personally banished or imprisoned three of Loki's sons, each prophesied to have a role in Ragnarök, in an attempt to prevent the twilight of the gods from coming to pass.

When Heimdall, guardian of the gods and guardian of the Bifrost, blows his horn to signify the beginning of the battle of Ragnarök, Norse mythology says that Odin will go to Mimir, a severed head containing great wisdom.

Baldr

Odin's son Baldr is not in the Assassin's Creed Valhalla base game, but as a prisoner of Surtr he plays an important role in the 'Dawn of Ragnarök' expansion.

Loki

The trickster god is a major player in Assassin's Creed Valhalla, and is traditionally one of the key factors in the cause of Ragnarök.

With the ability to change shape, Loki is well known for tricking him throughout Norse mythology.

Loki's sons

According to mythology, Loki is married to Sigyd, and together they have a son named Narfi.

However, Loki frequently sneaks off to Jotunheim to be with Angrboda, a witch whose house players can explore in the 'Assassin's Creed Valhalla' base game.

Together, they have three children: the wolf Fenrir, the serpent Jormungandr, and Hel, the goddess of death.

The end of Ragnarok

Most believe that Norse mythology says that some humans, as well as a handful of gods, will survive the event and repopulate the earth.

Others suggest that in the original Norse oral story of Ragnarök, there was no rebirth and it was the end of all things.

Players familiar with Assassin's Creed Valhalla will be able to see how the game takes creative liberties with its mythological inspiration, changing traditional stories and blending them with the rich lore of the franchise.

This expansion is available from this March 10 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S, PC, Stadia and Amazon Luna.
