British scientists have now researched in a study how a person's blood group influences the course of corona disease.

Munich – There have been initial suspicions since the beginning of the corona pandemic.

A person's blood group could have an impact on the course of a disease.

Now researchers from King's College London and the Medical University of Vienna have new insights.

As reported by

, which refers to information from the journal

PLOS Genetics

, a team led by scientists Alish Palmos (London) and Vincent Millischer (Vienna) has succeeded in establishing causal relationships between genetic risk factors and health effects (more news from the world department at merkur.de).

A method called "Mendelian randomization" was used to analyze approximately 3,000 proteins from the blood.

Vicent Millischer is quoted as saying, "This is possible because genetic variants inherited from parents are assigned to the child at conception, similar to your randomized controlled trial where people are assigned to groups."

According to

oe24.at

, the study enables an assessment of the causal relationships between high blood protein levels and the severity of the Covid 19 disease (more news about Corona in the live ticker from merkur.de).

Two degrees of severity were considered: hospitalization or the need for ventilation, which does not rule out death.

Study on proteins in blood: Some cause a severe course - others protect

Five blood proteins have been causally linked to hospital admission, ventilation or even death - GCNT4, CD207, RAB14, C1GALT1C1, ABO.

One protein is only associated with an increased risk of hospital admission - FAAH2.

A corona infection can take very different courses.

Some people become particularly ill with Covid-19.

Gender appears to be a risk factor.

Cleaning helps against germs.

However, it could itself lead to health problems, as researchers now report.

Eight proteins in the blood would causally protect against a severe course of corona disease - SELL, SELE, PECAM-1, LCTL, SFTPD, KEL, ATP2A3, ICAM-1.

Coronavirus: Blood group plays a crucial role in connection with severe courses

What is the result of this study?

The researchers from London and Vienna assume that the blood group plays a decisive role in the form in which people contract the corona virus.

However, there was no direct connection between certain blood groups and the risk of severe corona disease.

These proteins mentioned in study 14 are important starting points for further research to better understand the disease in general.

The proteins would also indicate approaches to use the right drugs in a treatment.
