960 parcels and thus more than 3000 households can get a fiber optic connection in Schongau.

The city, but also the citizens, don't have to pay anything for the expansion, you don't even have to commit yourself to the provider, Telekom, but can choose between cooperation partners.

Schongau – Telekom is expanding the fiber optic network in Schongau.

It is estimated that more than 3,000 households have access to bandwidths of up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbit/s).

"These are good prospects," said Mayor Falk Sluyterman on Thursday.

At a joint appointment, he symbolically pressed the start button for planning the high-speed Internet expansion.

The expansion area includes the entire old town and the area north to the Europakreisel, further west including the vocational school and Gnettner area and along the Faulen Graben in the south back to Marktoberdorfer Straße.

"Significant boost for the city"

"That means a significant boost forward," the town hall chief is convinced.

Especially during the pandemic you saw how important the internet is.

Problems when several people in a household work or learn at the same time, sit in a video conference, surf or stream should no longer exist in the expansion area.

"From a city perspective, that's a great thing -- the city doesn't have to inject anything," Sluyterman said.

"Construction should start in the summer," explains Florian Goldhofer, regional manager at Telekom.

The aim is to bring the first customers online this year, and the complete expansion should be completed in 2023.

The house connection should be free of charge for the citizens, he promises.

This not only saves homeowners money, but also enhances the value of their property, because the availability of a fast Internet connection plays a major role in the housing market, adds Martin Blockhaus, broadband sponsor of the city of Schongau.

Everyone agrees: Internet is part of the basic supply like electricity or water.

"No commitment to Telekom"

Open network access is offered.

"Of course we are happy when the customer comes to us," says Goldhofer.

However, contracts could also be made with cooperation partners.

Goldhofer also mentions a significant difference to previous relocations: "To put it bluntly: We drill right into the house." But that also means that you always need the consent of the owner, a tenant cannot commission it.

Fiber optic expansion is possible in this area.

Interested owners should get in touch as soon as possible.

Construction should start in July.

“This is a huge task for both the city and Telekom,” emphasizes Blockhaus.

"It requires a lot of coordination," adds Joachim Welz, construction coordinator at Telekom.

His request: "Those interested should decide as soon as possible, you don't have to book a tariff right away." The only important thing is the transfer to the house.

The more owners who take part, the better, then you will be well prepared for the next few years, says Goldhofer.

Report quickly, once construction has started, there is no longer any guarantee of a quick connection

Blockhaus puts it this way: "This is maximum flexibility for our citizens, you can be connected, but you don't have to." Everyone makes it clear: once the excavators have driven past the property, there is no guarantee for a quick and quick connection .

For Telekom, René Repper is on board as a local partner with Repper Media, which is not only appreciated by Telekom, but also by the city: if there are questions, the distances for the citizens are short, and at the same time Repper has local knowledge.

The city is already asking for understanding that the fiber optic expansion will not be without inconvenience, "it's a huge area," says Blockhaus.

After completion of the work, Schongau will be in a good position overall.

In addition, there is the equipment with the so-called vectoring technology and super vectoring in Schongau-West and also in Dornauer Feld - up to 250 Mbit can be booked there.

Last but not least, the city council had decided to also equip the peripheral and outdoor areas – completion should be by 2024.
