The original strains lost their ability to spread on stainless steel and polypropylene surfaces on the 4th day after storage, but Omicron was "tenacious" and remained infectious even on smooth surfaces for 7 days.

The "vitality" of the stainless steel, polypropylene and glass surfaces is nearly twice that of the original plant

The research team compared the stability of the Omicron BA. 1 SARS-CoV-2 variant strain and the original strain on the surfaces of five different materials, namely stainless steel, polypropylene, glass, tissue and printing paper.

The results showed that the Omicron BA. 1 SARS-CoV-2 variant strain was still infectious to a certain extent after being stored on stainless steel, polypropylene and glass surfaces for seven days; while the original strain was stored on stainless steel and polypropylene surfaces, and it was 4 days after storage. Loss of transmissibility; on glass surfaces, it loses its transmissibility on the 7th day.

A recent study by the School of Public Health of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong found that the Omicron variant is "sturdy" and remains infectious even on smooth surfaces for seven days.

Omicron survives paper towels up to five times longer than original seedlings

The Omicron variant was also slightly infectious after 30 minutes of storage on the surface of paper towels and printing paper.

But the original strain also lost its ability to spread after 5 to 15 minutes, that is, up to five times stronger than the original strain.

Pan Liewen, one of the corresponding authors of the study, professor of the School of Public Health and director of the Science Division of the Public Health Laboratory of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong, said that the results of this study once again showed that frequent and thorough hand washing and household cleaning with 1:99 diluted bleach water, Especially families with confirmed cases can effectively reduce the risk of being infected by pollutants.
