Aguililla is the birthplace of Nemesio Oseguera known as "

El Mencho

", leader of the powerful Cartel de Jalisco Nouvelle Génération (CJNG), for which the United States is offering a reward of 10 million dollars.

This city of about 14,000 inhabitants is one of the hardest hit by crime in Michoacan, which has eased in recent weeks thanks to the arrival of troops from the Mexican army in early February.

Previously, the city was almost besieged by criminal groups who blocked its access and prevented the transport of food and goods, according to testimonies collected by AFP.

In 2021, the state of Michoacan recorded 2,732 murders, or just over 8% of the 33,315 intentional homicides in all of Mexico.

As of January 31, 2022, the total already stood at 234 in this state, according to official figures.
