In order to get the Dachau schools fit for the Corona winter, the city councilors decided to buy mobile air filter systems.

But the devices still haven't arrived.

Blame it: the world situation.

Dachau – The Dachau city councilors wanted to do “the best possible way to protect children” in September and therefore decided by a large majority to take a step that was as expensive as it was daring: Knowing that the coveted air filter systems sometimes had a long delivery time, they ordered them for the city daycare centers and classroom mobile equipment made in China.

Cost: around 450,000 euros.

Goal: to protect the children from infection during the cold cold and corona season.

At the time the devices were ordered, the city still had hopes of – firstly – a 50 percent subsidy from the Free State for the purchase of the devices and – secondly – possible easing of the quarantine rules that had been strict until then.

Neither came true.

Only around 160,000 euros come as a cash injection from Munich for the devices.

And the question to what extent the air filters in the classrooms make life and learning easier for the children has not yet arisen for the elementary and middle school students in Dachau.

Because: Unlike for the Dachau daycare centers, the ordered devices for the city schools are still not there.

As Mayor Florian Hartmann had to admit to the family and social committee on Tuesday, the devices are still in China.

Because of the global political situation, it was unclear for a long time how the air filters were to get to Dachau: Delivery would take 40 days by ship and 18 to 21 days by rail.

However, the Ukraine war had just brought worldwide shipping traffic to a virtual standstill.

And it's also getting difficult for trains from China to Dachau: "They have to go through Russia and Belarus." And then, according to Hartmann, there may still be the tiny problem "that the delivery has to be declared in Poland".

In the meantime, however, the city and the Chinese producer have agreed to choose the overland route.

"Schauma, when the whole thing gets to us,"

the mayor therefore concluded his remarks with little optimism.

"We're just a bit attached to the world situation."

Many feared that ordering the air filters in the fall would be too late

This satisfies the fears of many that the order for the air filters came too late in the fall.

One of the reasons why the district committee decided against the purchase of the equipment for the secondary schools in the district was that delivery in the spring would be too late.

"We can then ventilate again," District Administrator Stefan Löwl explained in a meeting.

Karlsfeld's Mayor Stefan Kolbe had also pointed out the effectiveness of the air filters in protecting against corona infections, which had not yet been proven beyond doubt.

In the end, he feared, there would be “e-waste” worth several hundred thousand euros lying around in the classrooms.

Air filters should be here by the end of February

The volume of the devices was also an issue, which is why the city – as reported – decided to purchase higher-quality air purifiers that comply with occupational health and safety guidelines.

In the January meeting of the city council, Lord Mayor Hartmann said: "We are getting higher-quality devices because they are available more quickly." The air filters would arrive in the large district town by "the end of February".

Incidentally, in October the district council decided against the air filters and instead opted for the installation of so-called air conditioning systems, i.e. air conditioning systems, for the classrooms.

In the Dachau town hall, however, it was critical that this was not something “that could be implemented in the short term”.

Only the mobile air purifiers are quick to procure and commission.

How relative the term "fast" is has now been shown...
