Skyrocketing grain prices jeopardize food security

ANALYSIS - The war in Ukraine is disrupting the global supply of wheat, the staple food for one in three human beings. The countries of North Africa and the Near East are the most exposed.

This is a collateral risk of the conflict in Ukraine which has already caused a spike in grain and energy prices.

Meeting urgently on Friday, the G7 agriculture ministers warned against the temptations to restrict exports and speculative market behavior.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) estimates that food insecurity, already aggravated by the pandemic, could affect 13.1 million more people this year.

Thursday, Vladimir Putin threw oil on the fire, referring the responsibility to Western sanctions: "

If it continues like this, it will have serious consequences for the food sector as a whole"
