Ukraine, before and after, in photographs, of a country devastated by war

2022-03-12T16:46:51.997Z

From photographs verified and geolocated by EL PAÍS, we compare what some of the buildings, homes, schools and hospitals that have been attacked by Russia were like

After more than two weeks of war, Ukraine is a totally different country from the one where “almost everything was celebrated”, as our colleague Margaryta Yakovenko tells in this

podcast

in which she narrates what life was like for Ukrainians before the bombs .

The state of the houses, the roads, the hospitals or the schools reveal how destructive the Russian invasion is being throughout the territory.

Through photographs verified and geolocated by EL PAÍS we show the before and after.

Irpin residential neighborhood

At the beginning of March, the city of Irpin, about 25 kilometers from the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, was the target of Russian bombing.

Among the many buildings damaged by the attacks, blocks of residential buildings stand out.

In the image, you can see the ravages of the bombs in a block of flats that fell on March 3.

Borondianka residential building

A Russian attack in early March leveled the central half of a housing block in Borondianka, in the Kiev region.

In front of it is a bust of Taras Shevchenko, one of Ukraine's most famous writers and a national symbol.

Mariupol residential area

In these satellite photographs distributed on March 9 by Maxar, flattened houses can be seen in the city of Mariupol, one of the most affected.

Some of the most shocking images of the Russian invasion have been, precisely, those left by the attack on a maternal and child hospital in that city.

Faculty of Economics at Karmazin University, in Kharkov

After the attacks that Kharkov suffered during the first week of March, many emblematic places in the city were damaged, including the Faculty of Economics of the Karmazin University, which in the image we can see in flames.

Kharkiv regional administration building

On March 1, the Russian attacks reached one of the liveliest squares in the city of Kharkov, that of Freedom, surrounded by offices and bars.

In the picture you can see the regional administration building.

Freedom Square in Kharkiv

The center of Kharkov, including the vehicles that were in it, like the one seen in the following image, were reduced to rubble during the Russian attacks on the country's second largest city.

Kharkov School No. 134

The bombs that fell in Kharkov at the end of February hit specialized school number 134, located very close to the city center.

The images available on Google Street View to see what the place looked like date back to June 2015, which is why some details of the façade, such as the signage, are not identical to the current image.

Izium Hospital

In Izium, in the Kharkov region, a hospital was destroyed on March 8 after a Russian attack.

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Emine Dzheppar, assured on her social networks that the hospital had been working the previous days treating the wounded.

School in Zithomir

On March 4, one of the schools in Zithomir, 150 kilometers from Kiev, was destroyed after a Russian attack.

The signs showing the name and number of the school, 25, do not match because the Google Street View images are from 2018.
