The federal road B 388 crosses in the west of Moosinning with the Fasanenweg (left) in the direction of the kindergarten and the Einfangstraße (right) in the direction of Rewe and the sports grounds.

Mayor Georg Nagler thinks that a roundabout would bring more safety here.

Manfred Lex takes a critical view of this for a number of reasons.

In Moosinning, a possible roundabout on the B 388 was discussed.

Local councilor Manfred Lex fears that a roundabout could endanger the bypass.

Moosinning

- The idea of building a roundabout on the western outskirts of Moosinning is not new.

Already in 2011, before the construction of the local Rewe market, there were corresponding considerations.

Now the topic could become topical again.

Nothing is ready for a ruling yet, but Mayor Georg Nagler (SPD) is sticking to the idea.

However, CSU councilor Manfred Lex is critical of a roundabout on the main road – also with a view to a possible bypass.

"I have a personal problem with that," Lex said in the local council when it came to the financial and investment program for the coming years.

In it, funds are at least set for planning and execution - next year 20,000 euros, in 2024 and 2025 150,000 euros each.

"I'm not going to put up with that.

We can't fund that as a church.

It's a federal highway, and the federal government is responsible for that, not us," complained Lex, who doesn't see responsibility as the only problem.

"In my opinion, we are endangering our bypass road for Moosinning and Eichenried with this measure.

If we, as a municipality, finance a roundabout for the federal government, we are sending a signal that we are preparing for a high volume of traffic through the village in the long term and therefore have no need for a bypass,” Lex described his fears.

He would be in favor of the municipality using the bypass instead, “so that the project can move forward and the traffic can get out of the municipality”.

During an inspection with the road construction department and the police, it became clear that there was no need at this point: the construction department rejected a roundabout with the restriction that it would be quite conceivable if the community paid for it themselves.

There is no cost estimate yet, but a roundabout is currently being built on the B 472 west of Schongau – for a million euros.

“These roundabouts on federal roads are standardized in terms of size, so we will certainly be there with a million euros,” warned Lex. He thought that this money should be spent on kindergartens or on your own roads.

Lex stated: “We would be the only municipality in the Federal Republic that would finance a roundabout for the federal government.

I personally have a problem with that.” The CSU Council admitted that he too would like it if a roundabout were built there.

"But that's not the community's job, and we can't fund that unless we have enough money left over to say it doesn't matter."

Mayor Nagler confirmed that, according to information from the road construction department, there is a good chance of a roundabout if the municipality pays for it itself.

"Before, it was always said that it was impossible.

Now we saw an opportunity, so we seized this opportunity and included the funds in the planning," explained Nagler.

“Anyone familiar with the situation knows that this would be a very sensible thing to do.

There's the Rewe, it's going to the kindergarten, there's a lot of traffic there.

I'm still a fan of the roundabout, simply in terms of safety," says Nagler.

No funds have been deliberately set aside for this year, but only for planning purposes for the next few years.

“How that can then be realized is another matter.

But I would continue to try to follow this path," said Nagler

On the subject of the bypass, the mayor explained that efforts were being made to "push it on".

There have also been new talks with the road construction department.

The authority will reassess the volume of traffic and the possible routes in 2022, and there will also be an inspection of the planning office this year.

Last year, the road construction authority carried out a Europe-wide tender to find an office that would accompany the Moosinning project.

Even if everything is going smoothly now: you still have to reckon with a period of between ten and 15 years.

“At this time, safety for our citizens would be an important aspect for a roundabout.

But I don't know whether that's counterproductive," admitted Nagler.

In any case, traffic volume will continue to increase in the next ten to 15 years, he predicted.

"My fear is that people will say: The through-road through Eichenried has been expanded, Moosinning has been expanded, and a roundabout will ensure a certain amount of traffic calming - why do we need a bypass?" Lex repeated his concern.

There was no need for discussion with the other council members.

Ultimately, Lex was the only one who - as announced - voted against the financial and investment program for the fiscal years 2023-2025.
