Nothing stands in the way of modernization.

A train station in the Ruhr area will change completely.

Duisburg - The broken windows, the leaking roof and the gloomy platforms of the Duisburg main station will soon be a thing of the past.

Deutsche Bahn has signed the contracts for the modernization of the building with the construction companies, as RUHR24* knows.

NRW: This is what the plan for the renovation of the main station in Duisburg looks like

After some delays, the conversion can now start.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the federal government, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia* and Deutsche Bahn itself are to invest a total of over 260 million euros in the new construction of the main station in Duisburg.

A modern, architecturally attractive platform hall with a curved, wavy glass roof and six new platforms is planned.

“In the future, the train station should once again become the flagship of the city.

And it's not just the people of Duisburg who benefit from this, but all travelers who travel by train," says Stephan Boleslawsky, regional manager of DB Station&Service West.

And further: "We have always promised the city of Duisburg: The wave is coming!"

NRW: when the renovation work on the Duisburg main station should begin

In March, the first preparations for the renovation of the Ruhr area* train station are to be made.

Construction professionals will create areas around the building where material can be stored.

One of the plans for this is Otto-Kern-Straße at the main station between the entrance building and the track hall.

Most of the preparations should run in the background and have no impact on travelers.

The real construction work will start in May 2022.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the work has been planned in such a way that travel is affected as little as possible.

This approach is said to have proven itself in the ongoing modernization of Dortmund Central Station*.

Therefore, only two adjacent tracks should be modernized at the same time.

At the same time, specialists are working on the roof sections in this area.

According to Deutsche Bahn, the simultaneous work each takes a year.

During this time, the platforms will also be extended to 400 meters.

The construction of the new track hall is expected to be completed in 2028.

NRW: Duisburg main station – modernization long overdue?

"Duisburg Central Station is one of the most important junction stations in NRW for long-distance and local traffic and is used by more than 70,000 people boarding and alighting daily in local rail passenger traffic alone," says Ronald Lünser, CEO of the VRR.

He is therefore very pleased that the construction work can now begin.

But the mayor of the city of Duisburg, Sören Link, is also enthusiastic about the plan.

“Resolving the renovation backlog at the main station is still one of the most urgent requirements to make our city fit for the future in terms of mobile infrastructure.

The fact that work on the main station is about to start is therefore good news for Duisburg,” he says.

Until the renovation work ends, trains will stop at other platforms.
