Canada ready to exploit more of its rare earths and vast mineral wealth

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine exacerbated global needs, Canada compiled a list of 31 critical materials to produce.


Aluminum, potash, palladium, titanium or even uranium, nickel or vanadium… On its territory as large as half of Russia or twenty times the size of France, Canada has quantities of minerals and metals that the world will soon be grabbing.

In particular, it holds the world's largest reserves of rare earths behind China, Brazil and Vietnam.

A small part of these resources are exploited today.

But the mining industry and related activities employ more than 630,000 people and generate $100 billion a year, or 6.5% of Canada's GDP.

The expected jump in materials useful for the energy transition and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic have prompted Ottawa to accelerate its production targets for critical materials.

Since then, Russia's entry into the war against Ukraine has exacerbated global needs.
