Corona is back: The omicron variant is making waves in China, where two-thirds of provinces have reported hundreds of virus-confirmed.
The city of Jilin, which reported about 900 verified, has entered a closure on its 24 million residents.
The port city of Shenzhen, which has a population of 20 million, also closed yesterday (Sunday).
It was also reported that in Shanghai, the country's financial center, the authorities are conducting selective closures of entire buildings where virus carriers are located.
"Every day when I go to work, I worry that our office building will close, I will not be able to get home. I bought a sleeping bag and stored fast food in the office for extra security," said Yamang Li, 28, a city resident.
The current wave has severe effects on the economy and companies that supply parts to technology giants such as Apple and automakers Toyota and Volkswagen have been temporarily forced to reduce production.
Public transportation in Shanghai was also shut down and authorities asked citizens to work from home.
In addition, residential buildings and office complexes in the capital Beijing were isolated over the weekend and today six cases have been verified.
In all, the Asian giant has registered more than 1,400 new infections, despite zero tolerance policies.
This is the widest outbreak since the epidemic began about two years ago in the city of Wuhan.
About 4,636 people have died in China since the beginning of the epidemic, according to figures from the State News Agency.
