Changes in weather and hydrological conditions dissipate naturally

A spokesman for the government's inter-departmental red tide working group said that the occurrence of red tides is a natural phenomenon. Many factors, including seawater nutrient content, water temperature, salinity, water flow, and water stratification, may cause red tides to form. It is difficult to determine a single cause.

Due to the wide range involved, red tides may last for several days, and as weather and hydrological conditions change, when the number and concentration of algae in seawater decrease, red tides will naturally dissipate.

From last Saturday (12th) to today at 4:30 pm, Hong Kong Island Big Wave Bay, Shek O Back Beach, Middle Bay, South Bay, Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay, Stanley Main Beach and Chung Hom Kok Beaches have a total of Eight red tides were observed; another three were found from the Lantang Strait to Lei Yue Mun (including Tseung Kwan O and Tung Lung Chau Fish Culture Area), Victoria Harbour (near Hung Hom) and the southern waters of Hong Kong (including Tung Lam Strait and Shuang Si Mun) .

The spokesman said that the above-mentioned red tide has not subsided so far. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department has collected seawater samples from the above-mentioned districts for analysis and found that the above-mentioned red tides are all composed of toxin-free Noctiluca.

As of 4:30 p.m. today, there was no abnormality in the fish in all fish farming areas.

The AFCD will closely monitor the red tide situation in each fish farming area, remind relevant fish farmers to pay attention to the condition of the fish steaks and provide oxygen in a timely manner, and provide appropriate assistance when necessary.
