Geneva-Sana
A United Nations report today warned of a humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen during the period from June to next December.
And the United Nations News Center quoted a joint report issued by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Program and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), that “17.4 million Yemenis out of 30 million, which is the total number of Yemen’s population, now need urgent humanitarian assistance, including 2.2 One million children suffer from acute malnutrition.
The report added that it is possible that the number of Yemenis who may not be able to meet their minimum food needs will reach a record number of 19 million people during the period from June to December.
And the UN report expected that "an additional 1.6 million people in the country will decline to emergency levels of hunger, bringing the total number to 7.3 million people by the end of the year."
The report confirmed that the number of people suffering from catastrophic levels of hunger will increase five times from what it is currently, i.e. from 31,000 people currently to 161,000 over the second half of this year.
The UN report revealed a high level of acute malnutrition among children under the age of five, as 2.2 million children across Yemen suffer from acute malnutrition, including about half a million children who face acute malnutrition, a life-threatening condition.
Yesterday, the United Nations World Food Program called for the necessary funding to prevent more hunger in Yemen.
