A few days before the next meeting of the prime ministers' conference, its chairman, Hendrik Wüst, is traveling to Israel.
Now the head of government in North Rhine-Westphalia has tested positive for the corona virus twice - and is going into quarantine.
Jerusalem/Düsseldorf - North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) tested positive for Corona twice during his trip to Israel and will be in quarantine for the next few days.
A second PCR test for an infection was also positive on Monday evening in Jerusalem, the Düsseldorf State Chancellery said.
Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst is following the instructions of the Israeli health authorities and will be working from isolation in the coming days.
He is still doing well," said a spokesman.
The 46-year-old current chairman of the Prime Ministers' Conference (MPK) only started his four-day trip to Israel on Sunday and laid a wreath at the Israeli Holocaust memorial Yad Vashem in Jerusalem on Monday.
A bodyguard also had two positive PCR test results, it said.
The Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia reported in a Twitter message from Jerusalem and thanked for the numerous recovery wishes from home.
"I feel great.
Everything is fine," said Wüst.
Before the two positive tests, he had had two negative tests.
The "Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung" had first reported on the first positive test.
How long the quarantine lasts and when the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia can test himself for a flight home was initially not entirely certain.
"We need to clarify that.
We currently know of five days," said a spokesman.
The next Prime Ministers' Conference (MPK) is planned in digital form anyway, so that Wüst could also take part via video link from Israel, according to people close to him.
The conference is to discuss the current corona situation with Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) on Thursday.
Wüst's return trip was scheduled for Wednesday.
It is the first non-European business trip for the new head of government, who has only been in office for five months.
He is traveling with a relatively small delegation, as reported by the State Chancellery.
The CDU politician was to meet representatives from politics, business and culture in Israel.
One focus of the trip should be the further development of economic relations.

"I'm currently in Israel for some projects that are particularly close to my heart," Wüst said on Twitter.
Among other things, it is about networking the Israeli start-up scene with German medium-sized companies.
