A series of shots were fired into the air this Tuesday during the visit of the Chilean Interior Minister, Izkia Siches, to Temucuicui, in the Araucanía Region, forcing police officers to withdraw the entourage of the place.

According to the government spokesperson, Camila Vallejo, the purpose of the visit by the envoy of the new president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, was to talk with different agents of the Temucuicui community to assess the situation of the conflict that has escalated into violence in the last years.

“Minister Siches is doing well.

There were shots fired into the air, without any injuries to the entourage or damage to the vehicles.

This is the information we have at the moment," Vallejo said from the Palacio de La Moneda in Santiago, adding that "whoever thinks they can intimidate Minister Izkia Siches is very wrong."

Vallejo stressed that “the path we have decided to follow to face the critical situation in Wallmapu, and particularly in La Araucanía, we knew would be difficult.

The minister's itinerary and the activities that have been planned will continue”.

Siches had planned to hold a meeting with Marcelo Catrillanca, father of Camilo Catrillanca, a young Mapuche community member killed during an operation by Carabineros de Chile in 2018.

“I think there is good intention of the government, we value that.

Whatever has happened along the way, we must resolve that within the community, therefore, we are going to talk.

I don't know what happened, but the visit was very improvised, we can't say that this was done in time," Catrillanca said at a press conference moments after the events in Temucuicui.
