There are always protests when trees are felled in Wolfratshausen.

The city "has undertaken to carry out replacement plantings," explains the town hall.

Wolfratshausen - They warned with posters: When six plane trees were felled on Sauerlacher Straße, some environmentalists had protested against the measure required to widen the street.

When the building cooperative recently removed some trees from a property in the Farchet district, the environmental officer was angry.

Again and again there is resistance to tree felling in Wolfratshausen.

Tree felling in Wolfratshausen cause criticism: environmental protection manager explains how the city reacts

As the municipal environmental and climate protection manager Vivian Horngacher explains when asked by our newspaper, replacement plantings must be carried out in principle for almost all felled trees in the Loisachstadt.

"As far as trees in public areas are concerned, the city has committed itself to carrying out replacement plantings," says Horngacher.

In the private sector, the specifications of the respective development plans would apply.

These stipulate, for example, that some plants may only be removed in special cases.

"One of the reasons could be, for example, the risk to road safety," explains the environmental manager.

To prove this, property owners must submit an official report that explains why the tree had to go.

"Adequate replacement planting is prescribed in the event of a felling."

Environmental protection in Wolfratshausen: Not every tree can simply be felled - many are replanted

These measures are not regulated uniformly because the cases have to be viewed differently.

For example, on some properties it is not possible to plant a new tree on the spot, and the time of planting also depends on the wood and its properties.

An example: "Deciduous trees are usually planted at the time of leaf fall in autumn so that they can put their energy into developing new roots."

The city of Wolfratshausen makes sure to choose native plants that are adapted to the local weather conditions.

"However, against the background of the changing climate, there are recommendations to use non-native trees, such as ginko trees." If replacement planting is not possible in the place of the removed tree, it is placed on another green area.

"For this purpose, a planting concept is regularly developed," says Horngacher.

For climate and biodiversity: Trees are being replanted in Wolfratshausen

She explains that the city plants new trees every year - and far more than are felled: in 2019, for example, there were 73 and five shrubs, and ten more trees in the fall.

In the case of the plane trees on Sauerlacher Straße, too, the municipality has decided to do more than just replace them: for each tree that is felled, the municipality will plant four new ones in a different place.

The building cooperative has also announced that it will create replacements for the felled trees in Farchet.
